Any North Dallas/Collin County people pinged to this thread -- My first priority is to find a Bible Thumping, Spirit Filled Jesus Freak style church. If that church has an active homeschool ministry and a Choir that has room for an average (at best) bass singer, that would be great. Any suggestions on churches would be great. Also, suggestions on the utilities situation, things to help my family get settled in, and particulars on the community would be welcome.
To the CA crew, it was fun shooting at Burro Canyon and Freeping the antiwar wackjobs in September 2001. I'll miss CA, but I am already a home owner in Texas. Which is something that some one in CA will not be able to say for quite some time, unless they already are one. Keep up the good fight, and hold Ahhhnold's feet to the fire. I'm outta here.
No apology needed. I've lived in S. California since I was 5. We came here in 1948. My brother is trying to convince me to move to Georgetown, which is a half hour North of Austin. He lives on a golf course in a great big brick house that is about 1/3 of the price in California.
Welcome to Texas - you will never regret your move. Best of luck.

Ya'll find the gun laws much to your liking...
Lucky Dawg!
Hope I make the move soon myself.
Welcome to Texas!
One suggestion: Exchange your CA license plates for TX ones as soon as possible. Otherwise, people here will look down on with you with such great pity.
LOL -- just be careful what you ask for. In Texas, a request like that could land you with a bunch of snake-handlers and so forth. Heck, even a lot of middle-of-the-road Texas churches would probably qualify as "a Bible Thumping, Spirit Filled Jesus Freak style" by California standards and meet the requirements you're probably actually looking for.
Congrats, dude! Texas is God's Country. God-willin', I'll be writing one a these posts myself someday before I cash in my chips.
You'll wake up and it'll already be 100 degrees. Sometimes you'll get the feeling that the sun will never set it's so hot. You'll run from the air conditioned house to the car, from the car to the office, and back again. Then, there in North Dallas, you'll have many a night watching out for tornados. Left there after 5 years in Dallas, dont miss it. lol
Now that you're a (soon-to-be) Texan, you need to know the rules.
Strangers may talk to you with smiles on their faces. They are not necessarily trying to con you or sell you something. They're just Texans being friendly.
Women who call you "hon and "shug" are not hitting on you.
When you walk by someone on the street, you make eye contact, smile and either
a. say, "How're ya doon?"
b. say, "Hidey!"
c. nod
Got it? :-)
My Dad was a nonnative Texan named Bob who sang bass in church. So I like you already. :-)
Try Church of Christ. They are NOT United Churches of Christ.
They stick to the bible and are conservative. They don't typically have choirs -- everyone sings in harmony together a capella -- I love it myself, not everyone does. Just FYI.
Welcome to Texas.

BTW,
a "mayor" runs a town,
but a "not mayor" is just a bad dream.
Well, well, well...
Welcome to Texas... Coming from another FReeper who is a native Californian (Santa Clara Valley) and now resident in Allen, Texas. I've been here for five years now and I love it.
Allen is also a great part of North Texas to raise children, if you have any.
Good luck! We fled two years ago to the Midwest. We have NEVER regretted it. We were natives and actually owned a home in Riverside, but after being carjacked in my driveway and burglarized twice we hightailed it out of there. That, plus an experience with a leaking appendix after being sent home from the crowded emergency room FOUR times (too filled with illegals to bother with an insured patient?), the loss of my husband's job to India, the four-hour daily round-trip commute, and the high tax rate drove us out. Nobody in my circle of old friends lives in CA anymore, anyway. We miss family, but they're talking more and more about getting out if they can.
Some others asked for advice on moving out of CA. My best advice is that if you rent a truck to move yourself, rent from Penske. IMO they were FAR better than U-Haul or Budget. Well worth any extra money.
I lived in Houston for 6 years from '78 to '84. As much as Texas has to offer, I cannot abide a land in which you have to drive all day to get to some mountains. As annoying as California politics and society can be, my bond with the mountains and rivers of the Motherlode is now complete.
