You don't have to buy cowboy boots or ride a mechanical bull. You can if you want.
You can choose which power company to buy your electricity from and switch at any time. I go with the cheapest, although if you want to pay a lot more to a company with windmills, you can do that, too.
Take your time getting to know the state. Do visit Big Bend National Park. Later, head north and climb El Capitan, the highest mountain in the state. It's not terribly strenuous and the view is well worth it.
Go tubing down the Guadalupe River and visit the state shrine, the Alamo. You'll feel the ghosts of Crockett and Travis welcoming you to a state they sacrificed their lives to give to you.
Visit South Padre Island, where the beaches are nicer than in Southern California and the water much warmer. Explore historic Galveston, take a tour of Mission Control at NASA. Next month will be the peak of bluebonnet season here. Head to Luckenbach, Texas, and suck a cold one while listening to Waylon, Willie, and the boys. Visit the childhood home of LBJ the same day.
Welcome to a state where every statewide office is held by a Republican. That may take some getting used to, but it's the way we like it.

I live in Parker which is right next door to Allen. I think you will be happy living here. The drive up and down Central (I75) during rush hour isn't fun, but after California driving in LA, you will probably think it isn't too bad. At least you are only going as far as 635 instead of downtown.
Allen is a great little town. Not so little as it used to be though and it is suffering a bit from growing pains as city services struggle to keep up with the influx of population. New housing construction is going on all over the place. It now has several nice large grocery stores, restaurants, and a Target. Recently, alchohol sales were passed so you can get wine and beer in town.
The schools are great but with our Texas home-schooling laws, you can easily keep your little critters in the house instead. Lots of churches as others have already noted, big, medium and small in size.
Oh, and please take those school zone warning signs seriously. That is one time the police won't give you 5 or 10 over the posted speed limit. Also, be careful driving the toll roads and freeways in non-rush hour. The posted speed is only a suggestion, especially on 635. I swear I have been driving along on 635 doing about 70 or 75 only to get my doors blown off over and over by others doing 90 or so. And another thing, don't get in the left lane and drive the speed limit. You WILL piss off the other drivers. One bad thing is that we have aggressive drivers here and some are packing heat.
Glad you decided to to make the move to Texas. I don't think you will ever regret it in spite of the hot summers.
And get used to hearing "what church do you go to?" upon meeting someone........... it's what we do here.
I'm in Baltimore, slowly moving to Annapolis. I've given lots of thought to moving to Texas, but I just can't do it. Maryland has lots of water and the perfect climate IMO. We get all four seasons...sun, beautiful fall with changing leaves, snow, and spring. If you go any more south, you won't get snow. Did you know Maryland has more water front property than any other state? If you have any questions I'll be happy to answer.

No apology needed. I've lived in S. California since I was 5. We came here in 1948. My brother is trying to convince me to move to Georgetown, which is a half hour North of Austin. He lives on a golf course in a great big brick house that is about 1/3 of the price in California.
Until the devastating hurricane of 1875, Indianola was the second busiest port in Texas. Although rebuilt, Indianola was again devastated by the hurricane of 1886. By 1887, the town was abandoned.

Well that all sounds pretty familiar, except for the freeway names. The drivers packing heat, are they Bloods, Crips, MS-13, Las Fammilia, or just folks with attitudes and concealed carry permit? I share a city now with the former, and plan on turning into one of the latter, pretty soon. Without the attitude. I hardly ever drive over 70 anymore, and I hate the fast lane. Too few ways to escape morons with death wishes.

Naw, we just carry guns in our cars and trucks to have them handy. No attitude required.
