L,TOWM is moving to Texas
March 19, 2005 | Me

With apologies to Doug From Upland -- (Sung to the tune of "The Beverley Hillbillies" theme)

Let me tell 'ya a little story
'bout a Freeper named Bob
Could'nt buy a house
though he had a good job
then one day he asked his wife
"Do we have to stay here for the rest of our lives?"

"No" she said
"Let's go"
"LA sucks"

Well the next thing you know
'Ol Bob is on the net
Scoutin' out a place
that would be a good bet
His company said "If some one else quits,
than to our Dallas office, you can then split."

Texas that is,
Bush Voters
Swimming Pools

NO MOVIE STARS!

Well, Texans are far from perfect, but "what church do you go to" is just part of the conversation........ ;^)

The heat is incredible - winters are a bit worse in the Metroplex (that's Dallas/Ft.Worth to you newbie!) than they are here in Houston, but still nothing like they get in the North - and after the summer heat, you will welcome a bit of winter in Dallas...........;^)

Welcome to Texas. It's the best place to live (no brag, just fact). We have our problems, too, but as the saying goes "When a man is tired of Texas, he is tired of life." Here's a few friendly suggestions.

Don't tell anyone you only own 2 guns. They may think that you're strange. Either 1) buy more (always a good idea) or 2)just say that of course you own guns, but you just don't discuss the details. People will assume that you don't want the nosy feds to know your personal business, and will respect you.

Of course, you could exercise both options. I'm itching to exercise option No. 1 just thinking about it.

Other words of wisdom (well, advice, anyway). Get a concealed carry permit.

Never miss the bluebonnet season (you're getting here just in time).

Always protest your property tax appraisal. Property taxes are sky high and getting higher (but we're trying to do something about that).

The government schools are generally lousy (just less lousy than most other states). Homeschool or private school is almost always necessary if you want your children to share your values and not be at educational and maybe physical risk.

Yes, Texas has Republicans occupying every elected statewide office. But one party rule creates problems of its own. Lots of RINOs. But we're working on that, too, by targeting selected politicians in the Republican primary.

If you don't like high school football, learn to fake it.

When you drive on two lane FM (farm to market) roads, that shoulder on the right that's the width of a lane IS a lane. When someone comes up behind you and acts like he wants to pass you, you're supposed to get over in that lane and let him pass. To not do so is considered rude, and not driving friendly. When you pass or get passed in this way, you're supposed to give a friendly "howdy neighbor" type wave.

There's more, but that ought to keep you on the right track until you get your bearings.

Oh, and learn as much as you can about Texas history. We take our history VERY seriously. It's not just about the past; it's our present and future.

Another thing.......if you venture out of the city area and someone wants to pass you, pull over to the shoulder and let them go by - they will wave a THANKS to ya - I"m not kidding - it is another "thing" we do here...........

Iwo Jima, I do have to disagree with one thing you said - some of the schools are horrible, but you can still find some good public schools in rural areas -

L, Texas is a "right to work" State - meaning, you don't have to join a Union, so our school teachers are not all Union members.......... usually in the smaller rural schools, where teachers still have some control and discipline, the kids don't get the indoctrinization of bigger schools - they may not get the best education, but they still have some manners

Oh, and teach your kids to say "yes Mam, and yes Sir" - we like that a lot here........

You sound like an ad for the State Tourism Bureau! lol

If every California/yankee/lawyer who moved to Texas was like Dog Gone, I'd have ZERO problem with them. He was a fine addition and it's a damn shame he wasn't born here.

Then again he seldom pays off his beer bets, sort of like getting you to eat at The Swinging Door .........;-)

You'll find everything you asked for. Plenty of Jesus Freak churches, yet still plenty of liberal rats to Freep. But the beauty of it is, they're in the minority!

Well hey, stranger. How's school going?

Just for information, it's now against the law to be in the left lane unless passing slower traffic. The new Texan coming in should also know that it's a law to move over or slow down when you see a cop stopped on the side of the road. Not sure if that pertains to any car on the side of the car.
