WASHINGTON -- The Nuclear Regulatory Commission and other agencies are investigating how at least one illegal immigrant used a false Social Security number to work inside the Crystal River nuclear power plant.
The Immigration and Customs Enforcement division of the Department of Homeland Security detained three Mexican citizens at the site Thursday and charged them with entering the country illegally. At least one worked inside the nuclear complex under supervision, a spokesman for the power plant said.
All three men used false Social Security numbers to obtain work through a contractor for Progress Energy, which owns the site north of Tampa that includes one nuclear reactor and four coalfired power generators, according to the company and an immigration spokeswoman.
The incident raised concerns about soft spots in nuclear security that terrorists could exploit.
"Of all the places where an illegal alien should not be, this is like at the top of the list," said Rep. Ginny Brown-Waite, a Republican who lives near the plant, which is in her congressional district.

"Doing the Jobs Americans Won't Do"
Free market, RINO, Libertarian, Socialist Democrat, one big happy family big tent borderless America bump!
How? Pretty damn easily, apparently.
Just as it was easy for Muhammad Atta and his gang to secure whatever identification they needed.
Anyone know where they come up with these fake social security numbers? Are they someone else's?
Can you answer my question in post #5?
Back in the early 80's being underage, we made false drivers liscences too get beer , and to get into clubs with no computer help. And as far as the SSN's themselves they may be fake, or something these people dug out of the trash. How many documents in your mail have your SSN or bank account on them? Shred everything that you discard. Think about it.It's called "Identity theft".

The issue here is one of a lapse in the background checks. Their backgrounds should've been checked out more thoroughly.
This isn't a matter of "jobs that Americans won't do" but one of security. An American should have a difficult time getting the clearance to work in a nuclear plant.
There have been quite a few articles about this lately. They often buy documents. Apparently they are readily available. Sometimes they use numbers that belong to legal family members. Sometimes they steal them and sometimes they just make up a number.
If they just make a number there is a good chance that it will already belong to somebody else. There have been instances where retired people have had their Social Security cut-off because some illegal is using their number and reporting wages under it. The same has happened to people on unemployment where the government has gone after them for fraud because somebody else is using their number and reporting wages. There have even been babies born who have been assigned a social security number with a 20 year work history because some illegal just made up a number and started using it.
Ran across this related article looking this up on the net:
Drivers Licenses for illegal aliens
Issues
The open borders lobby routinely lobbies state legislatures to issue drivers licenses to illegal aliens as one of the keys to erasing the distinction between legal citizens and illegal aliens.
In the U.S., the drivers license is our de facto universal identification card. Yet many states do not thoroughly verify applicants' identities. Many states do not require a valid Social Security number to get a license and many will issue a state ID number for those without a Social Security number.
This makes it very easy for illegal aliens to obtain drivers licenses. These licenses become "breeder documents" which allow the recipient to obtain additional documents, based upon the false premise that he is a U.S. citizen. For example, all of the 9/11 hijackers had driver's licenses or state-issued non-driver's identification cards, which they then could use when opening bank accounts, renting housing, and boarding planes.
Eleven states issue drivers licenses to illegal aliens, including Alaska, Connecticut, Idaho, Louisiana, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Utah, Washington and West Virginia. In 2003, California's Governor Davis signed into law a bill that would give illegals drivers licenses. It is widely believed that this was the final act that contributed to his 2003 recall. Immediately after this law was signed, hundreds of thousands of signatures were collected that would have placed the question on the March 2004 general election ballot. Incoming Governor Schwarzenegger annulled the law, purportedly so that the electorate would not have a chance to vote on the issue.
One of the arguments in favor of issuing drivers licenses to illegal aliens is that it will make our roads safer. This is not likely, as someone who has broken U.S. law to come here will most likely continue to break our laws - including traffic laws - and to drive without insurance and to obtain "breeder" licenses under false names.

Excellent but lengthy piece on document fraud.
America's Identity Crisis
Document Fraud is Pervasive and Pernicious
Employers Prefer Ignorance
If illegal aliens invent a SSN, steal or borrow an authentic card, or buy a counterfeit one, most likely the SSA will not catch it without the aid of employers. But few employers seem inclined to offer that cooperation. The Employee Verification Service (EVS) is a mechanism for employers to match an individual's name and SSN with SSA records. There were 6.5 million U.S. employers in fiscal year 2000. Only 6,000 employers were registered users, and of those, only 211 used EVS. Employers complain that the feedback is not timely, and Mr. Huse acknowledged that SSA has not implemented its new online EVS as of October 2001. However, he also stated that a number of employers find the system to be too helpful, exposing the fact that their employees are in the country illegally or holding visas that do not permit them to work. Employers who knowingly hire these people are subject to fines and penalties.

I'm not crazy about giving the illegals any driving privileges but since the Feds refuse to keep them out of the country or deport them, it is not a very good deal for American citizens to have a bunch of illegals driving without insurance and jumping out of the car and running away whenever they have an accident. It is a tough call but I think it is a reasonable compromise at the State level.
If only the President would do his job and enforce the law.....
I've said it before and I'll say it again...you can't drain the ocean from your home if you aren't going to maintain the seawall that keeps it at bay.
Borders first.
Internal policing second.
The Dutch figured that out a long time ago too, but the lesson seems to have been forgotten or it's being ignored.
How tough can it be to check out the validity of a social security number?
These employers share with their illegal workers a sense of entitlement to line their pockets at the expense of the American citizen.
It was announced this week that our local illegal alien job center will be closed at the end of June. The local newspaper these past few days ran stories regarding reaction to the closure. They report that "community activists" have vowed to meet with the "day laborers" April 5 to try to save the city-sponsored Job Center. The workers claim they won't use private agencies to find work because those firms "take an unfair cut of workers' hourly wage." Right! They'd rather have the service free with the city as their benefactor. They say that, instead, they'll look for work outside of Home Depots and 7-Elevens (Ha! Like that's not already the case).
And our local sleaze contractors have chimed in apparently unconcerned with their sorry excuse for business ethics:
"Jacki Alexson, manager of nearby Lee Roofing, said the news is bad for business.
"This stinks, that's for sure," she said. "Any contractor will tell you the same. We use that place several times a month, for big projects. It's safer than hiring someone off the street, especially for residental projects."
I hate to break it to Lee Roofing but, given their disclosure, I wouldn't hire them to clean sh*t off my shoes!
