I thought the movie was great; however, it is still unclear to me when the man who played in all these war movies became religious :} I look forward to his next movie. For whatever reason, they all seem to be very addictive.

As an actor, Mel, "plays" a role. So as a warrior or war hero in earlier movies, he was just being an actor. It's what actors' do. My understanding is that Mel has always been a very religious man. But a man with some faults..as all of us have.

For whatever reason, they all seem to be very addictive. It's all been well documented in interviews he's done. He was raised Catholic. He bottomed out personally in the early 90's with his battle w/ alcohol. While cleaning up his act, he meditated on The Stations of The Cross, and the rest is history.
(p.s. he was religious even during the "war movies." Guess you didn't see the message behind them.)
A Google search on the subject will give you more information.

He is probably like most cradle Catholics including myself. Many don't really believe or practice our faith but come back to embrace it later in life. I came back to the church when I was 26. Others come earlier and others later or never.
