Byrd compares Republicans to Hitler Former Klansman decries attempts to approve judicial nominees Posted: March 2, 2005 2:10 a.m. Eastern

WASHINGTON – In denouncing Republican efforts to get President Bush's judicial nominees to the floor of the Senate for an up-or-down vote, Sen. Robert Byrd, D-W.Va., compared Republican tactics to Adolph Hitler's use of power in Nazi Germany.

Byrd, a former member of the Ku Klux Klan, said that if the GOP were to succeed in preventing Democratic filibusters of Bush's nominees, the move would "incinerate" the rights of all senators.

As many as 10 of Bush's nominees face the threat of filibuster, including William Myers, former lead counsel at the Interior Department who is up for a seat on the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals.

Myers has majority support in the Senate, but lacks the 60 votes needed to shatter a filibuster. To get past that barrier, Republicans would like to use their majority power to change the rules.

Byrd compared the idea to Hitler's abuse of power.

"Hitler never abandoned the cloak of legality. He recognized the enormous psychological value of having the law on his side," he said.

Byrd certainly isn't the first to compare Republicans to Nazis. Has anyone thought of countering by comparing him to the Kluxers ... oh, wait, that's not a comparison, that's an accurate portrayal.

Maybe he should do what he does best - intimidate them by burning crosses in their yards.

Well, at least he's admitting that the law is on the Republicans' side.

Can't we invoke Godwin's Law for the senate?

For those who are unfamiliar, allow me to post definition from Wikipedia:

Godwin's law (also Godwin's rule of Nazi analogies) is an adage in Internet culture that was originated by Mike Godwin in 1990. The law states that:

As an online discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches one. There is a tradition in many Usenet newsgroups that once such a comparison is made, the thread is over, and whoever mentioned the Nazis has automatically lost whatever argument was in progress. In addition, whoever points out that Godwin's law applies to the thread is also considered to have "lost" the battle, as it is considered poor form to invoke the law explicitly. Godwin's law thus practically guarantees the existence of an upper bound on thread length in those groups. Many people understand Godwin's law to mean this, although (as is clear from the statement of the law above) this is not the original formulation.

Nevertheless, there is also a widely-recognized codicil that any intentional invocation of Godwin's law for its thread-ending effects will be unsuccessful. See "Quirk's exception."

The very clear subtext is how much the Democrats fear a rule change. It needs to happen and they recognize the Republicans can do it.

Change the rule. Democrats can resign the Senate in disgust.

Byrd is an old fool who makes my skin crawl every time I see his face and makes me wanna puke at the sound of his voice. Shame on you West Virginians for re-electing him time after time.

One of the amazing things about Senator Byrd is that he is living proof that the Democrats tolerate racists as long as they are their racists. Frequently, Liberals smear Southerners who have joined the Republican Party and say they're all unreconstructed racists. Meanwhile, they have an old, doddering, racist coot like Byrd as one of their party leaders. This is like another one their leaders on women's issues: Teddy Kennedy. It's the gift that keeps on giving. It's the proof that they can talk the talk, but they cannot walk the walk.

Oh my! Too funny, from a historical perspective. A pretty good article as well if I do say so myself.
Senate Rules Abused to Keep Filibusters
Snip...Precedent also supports this principle. In 1975 the senators changed the filibuster requirement from 67 votes to 60, after concluding that it only takes a simple majority to change the rules governing their proceedings. As Senate Majority Leader Mike Mansfield (D-Mont.) said at the time: ''We cannot allow a minority'' of the senators ''to grab the Senate by the throat and hold it there.'' Senators Leahy, Kennedy, Byrd and Biden all agreed. Nearly a decade ago, Lloyd Cutler, the former White House counsel to Presidents Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton, concluded that the Senate rule requiring a supermajority vote to change the rule is ''plainly unconstitutional.''
Do those folks so readily forget their own actions?

Just like Dean saying Republicans were "Evil" yesterday. Byrd and his ilk should remember this by our Lord:

Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter.

Byrd is such a "POS!"

"The law" is what's specifically laid down in the Constitution, as this so called "Constitutional schollar" darned well knows! The Constitution specifically calls for a supermajority ONLY in a few well defined instances. Senate rules are just that... RULES! Rules govern things like dress codes, for goodness sakes! Rules are not "the law."

Of course, leave it for a POS like Byrd to try to make people believe that laws would be broken by actually following the laws set down in the Constitution!
