Senate Coverage -- (March '05)
US Senate & House ^ | 3-01-05 | Congress

Posted on 03/01/2005 4:50:59 AM PST by OXENinFLA

Since "Free Republic is an online gathering place for independent, grass-roots conservatism on the web. We're working to roll back decades of governmental largesse, to root out political fraud and corruption, and to champion causes which further conservatism in America.", I and others think it's a good idea to centralize what the goes on in the Senate (or House).

So if you see something happening on the Senate/House floor and you don't want to start a new thread to ask if anyone else just heard what you heard, you can leave a short note on who said what and about what and I'll try and find it the next day in THE RECORD. Or if you see a thread that pertains to the Senate, House, or pretty much any GOV'T agency please link your thread here.

If you have any suggestions for this thread please feel free to let me know.

Here's a few helpful links.

C-SPAN what a great thing. Where you can watch or listen live to most Government happenings.

C-SPAN 1 carries the HOUSE.

C-SPAN 2 carries the SENATE.

C-SPAN 3 (most places web only) carries a variety of committee meetings live or other past programming.

OR FEDNET has online feed also.

A great thing about our Government is they make it really easy for the public to research what the Politicians are doing and saying (on the floor anyway).

THOMAS where you can see a RECORD of what Congress is doing each day. You can also search/read a verbatim text of what each Congressmen/women or Senator has said on the floor or submitted 'for the record.' [This is where the real juicy stuff can be found.]

Also found at Thomas are Monthly Calendars for the Senate Majority and Senate Minority

And Monthly Calendars for the House Majority and Roll Call Votes can be found here.

(Sec. 106) Precludes an individual debtor from filing under Federal bankruptcy law unless the individual has received a briefing from an approved nonprofit budget and credit counseling service prior to filing a bankruptcy petition, unless the U.S. trustee or bankruptcy administrator determines that the service for the district in which the debtor lives is not reasonably able to provide adequate services to the additional individuals who would otherwise seek credit counseling because of such requirement. Conditions a Chapter 7 or Chapter 13 discharge in bankruptcy upon the debtor's completion of an approved instructional course concerning personal financial management. Requires the clerk of each district to maintain a public list of credit counseling agencies and instructional courses concerning personal financial management. Prescribes criteria for approval of such agencies and courses.

I just started reading the Bill looking for the pork and it didn't take long to find some. Want to make some money. Become an "approved" credit counselor. Of couse, you will need "connections" to get the approval.

(Sec. 231) Prohibits a bankruptcy trustee from selling or leasing to unaffiliated third parties, personally identifiable information possessed by the debtor concerning an individual if that is contrary to the debtor's privacy policy, unless specified conditions have been met, or the court approves such sale or lease after a consumer privacy ombudsman has been appointed.

Another interesting tidbit. There is a great deal of mischief in this Bill, imho. There is also a section that will require elementary and secondary schools to develop courses that teach personal finance. Notwithstanding Orin Hatch's pleas yesterday about how hard and long they have worked on this thing and how "bi-partisan" it is (always grab your wallet when you hear that one), I hope this does not pass, although I fear that it will.

Talk about not wanting to be accountable. Part of the trick is to write these things so as to be incomprehensible to most people. One thing that struck me is the sense of intense lobbying that must have gone on by credit counseling agencies. They successfully got their fingers in the pie. I wonder if the debtor has to pay their fees, which will come off the top, count on that, and if payment in full will be required before the debtor has any hope of a discharge (bet it will).

Speaking of credit counseling ... The folks up on the Hill remind me of teenagers with mom & dad's credit card

And, as we know, part of the backup for that credit card is the income from SS decuctions which the evil Bush is trying to deprive them of. I guess I'm just feeling unusually disgusted with the lot of 'em today.
