Former aide: Relationships more important than history (Wead cancels on Chrissy Matthews)
MSNBC ^ | 2-23-05

WASHINGTON, D.C. - In a note to MSNBC “Hardball” anchor Chris Matthews, Doug Wead says he “has come to realize that personal relationships are more important than history” and that he is asking his attorney to “find the best way to vet these tapes and get them back to the president to whom they belong.”

Wead sent the note to Matthews and “Hardball” producers on Tuesday following the cancellation of his scheduled appearance on the program. Following is the text of the note from Wead to Matthews:

Dear Mr. Matthews,

I am so sorry to cancel your show. It was very gracious of you to allow me a chance to share my heart and regrets about recent events. It seems the better part of wisdom for me to forgo television for a time. It would only add to the distraction I have caused to the president’s important and historic work.

Contrary to a statement that I made to the New York Times, I have come to realize that personal relationships are more important than history. I am asking my attorney to direct any future proceeds from the book to charity and to find the best way to vet these tapes and get them back to the president to whom they belong. History can wait.

Thanks for your consideration,

Doug Wead

To: everyone

Kudos to Mr. Wead for rising above the sewer level of our celebrity culture. Or, kudos to whomever scared him off for now.

It's good to know he still has a conscience.

Well, I certainly respect the guy for acknowledging the error of his ways. It is rare that one publicly owns up to his mistake and attempts to make restitution. A very good first step. Bravo.

Being called a back stabbing Judas traitor doesn't hurt either!

Maybe he heard President Bush said something like: "I think we oughta be smokin' that weed!" on one of those tapes, and realized it was actually a threat against him.

I thinking we could have started a 30 pieces of silver campaign, but if he wants to back off - so can we.

I would have loved to be the 'fly on the wall' during the meeting that got him to change his mind.

Sounds like a genuine guilty conscience to me. A forced repentation does not usually materialize as an admission of guilt, but as some lame excuse such as "legal difficulties".

I'm thinking the same thing as you---would love to have heard the conversation, BUT

Unlike some of ya'll, I am not ready to give this guy a pat on the back for doing the right thing---

I think he got a call from Simon & Shuster and his agent telling him to ixnay on the apestay, because there will be such a backlash, that he WON'T SELL ANY BOOKS TO THE PEOPLE THAY BUY THEM--CONSERVATIVES, REPUBLICANS---dems don't buy books, they go to the DNC website to get their talking points for the day....

I have come to realize that personal relationships are more important than history.

I wonder how many friends, acquaintances and relatives called him up and told him what a sniveling little weasle he was.

Well, at least he's trying to make it right now.

This is way too late and Wead wants to drop the hot potato of the tapes in Bush's lap, where the media will endlessly hound him to release them. Also, what does he mean "to find the best way to vet the tapes?

I am glad he has done this now. But, he caused a lot of contraversy. I just hope the story about his "regret" gets as much attention.

However, I have a feeling he is counting his blessings. He is lucky he didn't tape Clinton. He would not be around to apologize. Bush is a forgiving and gracious man. He will say "End of story," and so, I guess, should we.

(but a little part of me just wants a bit of *K-A* in the story- sorry.)
