Agitating......sublimely perfect way to describe Gingrich's modus operandi. Guy's as transparent as a window pane.

I'm not dismissing the scope and dimension of the illegal problem.......it must be dealt with.

However, an opportunist like Gingrich knows how to get your attention.

And a politically ambitious Gingrich also knows how to count votes.......and the reason why he won't do anything concrete about illegals is that there's a whole lot of votes there----if and when they get legal----and massive numbers of votes from their compadres who are here legally.

That said, we must take steps about the problems you outlined.

Conservatives prefer the hardline approach, of course.

But it's an extrmely difficult problem to tackle....there are all kind of conflicting issues, so many groups vying for and against.

One recommendation might be that the countries from which these people are fleeing should take some responsibility for allowing border-crossings with impunity, and even be forced to contribute to their upkeep.

Americans are afraid to ask, "What next?"

The Mexican government now publishes a book instructing its nationals on how to be an illegal.

Ironically, one of the big selling points of the NAFTA deal was that it would greatly alleviate illegal Mexican border-jumping......but since that time it has skyrocketed.

Adding insult to injury American taxpayers are subsidizing foreign aid transfers to Mexico.

The government of Mexico---with all of its oil revenue----needs to be taking care of its own people, not "outsourcing' them as wards of American taxpayers.

Mexico can well-afford it. Mexico has more "Forbes" billionaires, 11, than all but eight other nations. It has more billionaires than Saudi Arabia, Switzerland or Taiwan. It also has more than 85,000 millionaires. According to the CNN report,

Mexico sits on oil reserves worth about $400 billion, but Mexico's state-owned oil company, Pemex, doesn't have the investment funds to tap those reserves, and Mexico's Congress refuses to allow foreign investment in Pemex.

According to Visa International that is now clamoring for a share of the transfer fees, American money sent South of the Border by illegals constitutes $38 BILLION this year alone constituting Mexico's second largest most profitable industry.

America needs to seal our borders and let Vincente Fox know that we will cut off every penny in aid he gets from the United States.

America should mandate proof for all cash transfers out of the US and/or force all transferring agencies -- banks, credit unions, Amex, Western Union to collect a substantial withholding tax -- 50%, say -- on every unexplained foreign remittance.

Yes, good points, I'll add [briefly from work]:

In addition to the instructional booklet, FNC reports there is a mock border training area in central Mexico where you try to evade BPs while "crossing" into America.

I read a while back Pemex has about 5 years of reserves that can be easily extracted using their current technology, as you indicate they will need a healthy infusion of foreign investment and new technology to maintain production levels. Unfortunately Mexico allows no foreign investment. What happens then? Reduced production? Allow Western investments? Or from Russia, China, Venezuela?

Whew, I hadn't yet seen the $38B figure of money sent from US to MExico. Yes we should do something to snare some of it. But Bush will never get tough on Fox, they seem to see eye-to-eye on these open border issues.

Congress could, at lobbyists' requests, slip some provision into some big bill where the banks and US Treasury could siphon a bit of the southward flowing money stream but only a bit I'd guess - enough to make the banks a pot of money with a bit going to Treasury, not enough to cause Fox to do more than mildy protest.

Wonderful proposals, those. I heartily agree with each of them.

Meanwhile, we get more NAFTA-wanna-bes accepted by the Senate and President, though the result will likely be the same flood. Vincente Fox will continue to dictate terms to Bush and his pals...while Bush's nephew yaps about how we're doing wrong by doing anything remotely reasonable about border control. And the American public grumbles in disagreement, but acquiesces to the logrolling internationalists they cannot stop from paying off Congress.

Why, I thank my lucky stars we live in a republic where the views of the American people are represented! /sarcasm

I live in NY. The DMV stopped giving licenses and renewals to people who could not show a valid SS number. Hundreds of Thousands of illegals lost their licenses by default. The Hispanic Defense Fund sued crying racism. A judge halted the DMV from its actions.

These illegals are destroying this country, just as the barbarians did Rome.

Perhaps it isn't. If one looks at the rights spelled out in the Constitution, when it refers to the people it always refers to the "citizens" with one exception, the 14th amendment. The courts have ruled that without wording to the contrary, it does mean anyone. If the words aren't there it's rather difficult to argue otherwise?

Why the writers chose to leave this very important word out of the wording is beyond me, but it needs to be changed.

Gingrich irritates me so much. He will have ten excellent ideas and then throw in a real clunker.

Does everyone realize that Gingrich is part of a Commission to "reform" the United Nations?

If they actually fix the corruption that horrid institution will then have carte blanche to proceed with its plans for a One World Socialist Government.

From what I have read in the Mexican Newspapers, Mexico is going to open PEMEX to Mexican investors. The 11 billionaires will probably be trillionaires soon after this happens.

V. Fox, Bush and Canada will have a meeting about NAFTA PLUS the week before Easter. Mexico is wanting more from NAFTA and is going to push for it. This is the whole enchilada.

The US will be preparing for Easter, so our politicians will sneak this through.

It's getting a little confusing as to what Gingrich's position is. Sometimes he appears to take the Jack Kemp, Bill Bennett, Ted Kennedy line that a billion a year isn't enough then other times he says we need to clamp down. Will the real Newt Gingrich please stand up?

I like the Mexican people in the fly over parts of Mexico. The mid level and workers of Pemex are good. It is the government and the high up in Pemex that are the vultures and looters. The peso was about 8 cents (12.5 to a dollar). When Pemex found the sito grande, a very large oil pool that covers parts of the states of Chiapas and Tabasco also a long ways into the Gulf of Mexico.

Pemex borrowed billions to produce this great oil find. The looters (government) stole most of the money and what they did buy was junk oil rigs and drill pipe, etc. 1,000 pesos which was worth about $80 now will not buy a coke. This was due to the looters stealing billions from the Mexican people.

Instead of overthrowing the looters the Mexican people had an out, they had no weapons and they could cross into America and have a much safer life. This hurts both Mexico and America as Mexico lost some of it's hardest workers. The gangbangers also came over from Mexico as they could rape and pillage at will.

The government of Mexico is propped up by the billions sent back by the illegals and by our government having borders that are too open.

The only chance I see to help America and Mexico is to seal the border, deport the people who are not here legaly. We also need to arm the Mexican people so they can have a chance against the looters with their armies.
