PORTLAND, Ore. - Howard Dean, the newly minted leader of the Democratic Party, and former Pentagon adviser Richard Perle made clear their opposing views on the war in Iraq during a debate marred by a protester who tossed a shoe at Perle.

All we have to do is sit back and laugh at the carnage Dr. Demento will leave in his wake. He's a loose cannon if there ever was one.

Why do communists insist on using shoes for emphasis? (Remembering Kruschev's famous sole hammering experience)

Yea... they recently lost half of their 'Navy' when one of their subs broke down at sea.

It was towed back to port by the other half!

Dean seems to have missed the fact that Clinton was the one who swaggered around saying he would would do things. Bush actually did kick Sadam's butt.

There is no mention in any of the articles I'm finding of the protestor being arrested.

Did they just give him his shoe back, and send him on his way?

"Defense is a lot broader than swaggering around saying you're going to kick Saddam's butt," Dean said Thursday, drawing cheers from the crowd in this city that overwhelmingly voted Democratic last November.

Perle said the war in Iraq was justified based on the intelligence available at the time. "Sometimes the things we have to do are objectionable to others," he said.

Dean also said the Bush administration has ignored the mounting threat in Iran and North Korea. "We picked the low hanging fruit in Iraq and did nothing" about the other, more dangerous regimes, he said.

Perle had his own barbs, too. He began his opening comments in the 1 1/2-hour debate by saying Democrats "looked at the Democratic Party and chose a physician to lead them."

Interesting alternative story about what this "protester" actually said while throwing the shoe at Perle from Powerline: Dean Smackdown Update

We posted yesterday on the debate in Portland last night between Richard Perle and Howard Dean, which we predicted would be the most one-sided affair since the Little Big Horn. Reader John Arcari has a report:

I just read an account of the debate held last night between Richard Perle and Howard Dean wrritten by a left winger who attended the debate. The highlight of the report is when some 52 year old Democrat threw a shoe at Richard Perle while screaming "mother f****** liar" numerous times as the police dragged him out of the debate hall. He missed Mr. Perle, who took the incident in light fashion. I believe there were local TV stations there, so I would think the whole episode would be on tape. Ah, the Democrat Party at work!!!

There is simply no plumbing the depth to which the American left has fallen. We understand that the "debate" will be televised on Cspan a week from tomorrow.

It was tongue in cheek. I am Canadian and Canada does have a military, but it is completely incapable of defending Canada from agression. Most Canadians view the U.S. military as their protectors until recently with the controversy of the missile defense system.

The nut who threw the shoe was Brian, he was on Ed Shultz's show today. The SCair America host said laughing about it and "at the worst , you were just a little bit out of bounds".

Why do communists insist on using shoes for emphasis?

I believe it is peculiarly Russian. When the Red Army smashed its way into Berlin(1944), they thought that toilets were 'potato-washers'.

Shoe-throwing is also popular on America's roads and highways. Strangely, there seems to be a 'one-throw' limit on this behavior, noting that you never see them in pairs.
