LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) -- A military draft would not improve the quality of soldier over the current all-volunteer force, the head of Army recruiting said Thursday.

Maj. Gen. Michael D. Rochelle, commanding general of the U.S. Army Recruiting Command at Fort Knox, said volunteer soldiers want to be a part of the military, making them "as wonderful a soldier as one can imagine."

"I think what we have today far surpasses a draft," he told a Rotary Club audience.

Rochelle, 54, oversees 7,000 Army recruiters worldwide and has a $250 million advertising budget with a goal of bringing in 80,000 new soldiers this year. It's a daunting task, he said.

Momma told Johnny not to go downtown
She heard the Army recruiter was hangin' around
Johnny went downtown anyway
Wanted to hear what he had to say

Good. I would not want to serve with draftees. I am in the navy and I see plenty of bad attitudes from people who volunteered to be here! I could only imagine what would happen with conscripts. The military would have to bring back corporal punishment in order to keep the malcontents in line. This would be a PR nightmare.

There are plenty of other options the military can exhaust before a draft would be necessary.
