THIS IS TOTALLY AWESOME GRAFFITTI!!!!
2003 Freedom*Rock ( In Rural Iowa) ^ | Summer 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004 | Ray "Bubba" Sorensen

Posted on 02/17/2005 5:02:28 AM PST by Robert Drobot

There is a huge rock near a gravel pit on Hwy.25 in rural Iowa. For generations, kids have painted slogans, names, and obscenities on this rock, changing it's character many times. A few months back, the rock received it's latest paint job, and since then it has been left completely undisturbed. It's quite an impressive sight. Scroll down and check out the multiple photos (all angles) of the rock. It seems the flag was draped over the rock, but it's not. It's actually painted on the rock too.

Here's the artist Ray "Bubba" Sorensen.

Directions to the Freedom*Rock

Approx. 37 miles west of Des Moines on Highway 25 approx. 1 mile south of Interstate 80 (exit 86) & 12 miles north of Greenfield, Iowa.

Some of the most talented people I know are from Iowa. Kudos to Bubba!

Great post. Thanks. A very appropriate place for such a work of art. In the heartland of America

Yes. His 2004 rendering is equally moving.

The 2003 painting blended a collage of historical statements through to President Bush. I found it particularly appealing for that reason.

"Hope that's guarded somehow."

Nah, not even a fence, but this is Iowa. I'm not even sure if "Bubba" has the owner's permission to paint the rock, but then, this is Iowa. Our liberals pretty much keep to the cities and seldom venture out.

This is not graffitti, but rock art.

Very typical around army posts.

If you ever get the opportunity, go out to Ft. Irwin, CA and drive in along the main post access road.

THe rock-art there is absolutely spectacular.

Also, in the main access-way at Camp Doha, the rock-art morphed ('cuz there were no rocks) into Jersey-barrier-Art. Most impressive as well.

Sort of reminds me of the rock at the end of the movie "Red Dawn"

Has anyone seen the rock lately? Wonder what the weather has done to it in two years?

And there's also a great little 9-hole golf course just off exit 86 - 5 by 80. I always try to make time to stop on my way home from Des Moines. Usually can get around in less than an hour.

My understanding is that he repaints the rock prior to Memorial Day. He has done this since 1999. Here's a link to his homepage and a view of his previosu efforts.

Besides, "Bubba" would just repaint it even better so what
would they gain. The rock is a living thing but unlike most
living things, it gets new life from time to time.

Good job "Bubba" from a neighbor of old from Dexter.

It is only "graffiti" if it is unwanted. Would that art be unwanted?

Oh, yeah! The libs must hate it!

It seems Ray "Bubba" Sorensen re-paints "Freedom*Rock" each year.

He should stop now, and preserve this iteration. It's beautiful...inspirational even. Someone should send this guy a link to FR.

I hate to rain on the parade, and I don't blame the artist because he is too young to understand, but, in my opinion, it would be better if the Kennedy quote about "bearing any burden.." were not on the rock.

I believe that statement by Kennedy is tainted by the Vietnam War. It is seared into the memory of many a Vietnam Vet as many of my generation took that statement to mean that if we went into the Armed Forces, especially if we made the ultimate sacrifice, our nation would support us and sacrifice and perservere until victory in Vietnam. That statement was made just a few years before the post-John Kennedy Democrats and their MSM operatives ignored that statement and took the nation to the extreme left. In my opinion, including that statement only demeans the others.

Here is the same statement, from Kennedy's Inaugural Address, in a broader context - (note the mention of God)Could a Democratic Leader make this speech today?

The world is very different now. For man holds in his mortal hands the power to abolish all forms of human poverty and all forms of human life. And yet the same revolutionary beliefs for which our forebears fought are still at issue around the globe—the belief that the rights of man come not from the generosity of the state, but from the hand of God.

We dare not forget today that we are the heirs of that first revolution. Let the word go forth from this time and place, to friend and foe alike, that the torch has been passed to a new generation of Americans—born in this century, tempered by war, disciplined by a hard and bitter peace, proud of our ancient heritage—and unwilling to witness or permit the slow undoing of those human rights to which this Nation has always been committed, and to which we are committed today at home and around the world.

Let every nation know, whether it wishes us well or ill, that we shall pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe, in order to assure the survival and the success of liberty.

This much we pledge—and more.
