The same-sex marriage debate and an almost daily dose of AdScam could be having an effect on the fortunes of Canada's two main parties, a new poll suggests. Liberal voter support has slipped three points to 38% across the country, but they've lost a whopping 10% in vote-rich Ontario.
The Conservatives have gained three points nationally, rising to 29% and their support in Ontario has jumped six points to 32%.
The SES poll shows Grit support in the country's most populous province has plunged to 44%, compared to the 54% support it enjoyed in an SES poll last October.
Quebec is the only region where federal Liberal support grew in the latest poll --up four points to 36%. They still trail the Bloc by nine points.
SES pollster Nik Nanos is cautious about what's causing the swings in central Canada, saying it's likely to be a combination of factors.
"It could be that the Liberals might be picking up support in Quebec because of their position on same-sex (marriage) and then maybe the Conservatives (are) picking up a few more points in rural and small-town Ontario (for their opposition to it)," Nanos said.
The SES survey of 1,000 Canadians shows Jack Layton's New Democrats remaining steady nationally with 17% of voter support, followed by the Bloc Quebecois at 11%, based solely on its popularity in Quebec. The Green Party stands at 5%.
The number of uncommitted voters was 12%
The SES random telephone survey was conducted between Jan. 28 and Feb. 2 and is considered accurate within 3.1%, plus or minus, 19 times out of 20.

The conservatives are still way behind, though. Me thinks that the Canadian voters still don't get it.

Good point, however the inquiry into the Adscam is just heating up. The damning report will come out before an election and they are sure to lose more points by the time its all over. The libs won't be able to overcome this, it's just to big.

Bloc is short for Bloc Quebecois, the party that wants independent Quebec.

I'll try it without any profanity. Since I'm an American, I can't guarantee it's 100% accurate:
The Bloc Quebecois is a Quebec-only political party that is not affiliated with the main Canadian national parties (Liberal Party, Conservative Party of Canada and New Democratic Party, or NDP). They are for greater Quebec sovereignty, among other (generally liberal) things.
The only parties that really compete in Quebec since the demise of Brian Mulroney's Progressive Conservative Party are the Liberals and the Bloc. Since about 1 in 4 Canadians live in Quebec, this makes it difficult for the Conservative Party to actually win a majority of seats in Parliament. They'd have to do a lot better in Ontario than they are currently doing to make up for sure Quebec losses. 32% in Ontario's not going to cut it.
The people of Canada will vote the Liberals back in. They would vote the Liberals back in if they started firing machine guns in Daycare Centres. The Canadians are terrified that one of these days they will have to pay for something they think they are getting "free" now, and all the Liberals have to do is tell them that the Conservatives will close the candy store and they are right back on the Liberal plantation.
I have lived here 6 years now and I can't figure it out, but it happens every election.
