DeLay Sees Chance of Immigration Deal(Time to Email DeLay!)

WASHINGTON, Feb. 8 - Representative Tom DeLay of Texas, the House majority leader, said Tuesday that conservatives might be able to compromise with President Bush on his proposal allowing illegal immigrants to work in the United States legally.

Such a compromise could entail, for example, requiring illegal immigrants to return to their native countries to apply for the program, Mr. DeLay said.

Mr. DeLay said he talked recently with the president, who has advocated a guest worker program that would be open to workers who are currently in the country illegally as well as to newcomers.

That's one way to get them the heck out of this country to never return!

Excellent. Let's change the "could entail" to "shall entail", then it sounds like a plan.

"Has Delay blinked?"

Not necessarily. I do believe this was one of the cornerstones of Tancredo's guest worker bill. This may be Delays way of pushing Tancredo's proposal as a 'compromise'.

What we DONT want is Cornyns guest worker bill proposal. He is the Senate manager of Bushs 'proposal', is this coincidence?

Awhile back, there was a link posted in a thread to a comparison chart on the various proposals. Somebody may remember who posted it.

They can dance around this issue all they want but the bottom line is that they are going to have to come to the final realization that until they secure the ports and borders, start enforcing the immigration laws ALREADY ON THE BOOKS and deporting ALL THE ILLEGAL ALIENS; there will never be a total victory in the "war on drugs", there will never be a total victory in the "war on terrorism" and there will definitely never be "homeland security!" PERIOD!

Semper Fi,
Kelly

How about this compromise?

W. shuts up about burying the nation in illegals and Delay promises not to impeach him.

The source of much of our illigal immigration problems is the deplorable socio-economic conditions of much of Latin America. On paper, many of these countries have democratic governments. In reality, they are ruled by an elite aristocracy that comprises at most, 10% of the population. These governments don't oppress their people in ways that would risk military intervention by us; rather, they oppress them by depriving them of opportunities to improve their standard of living. Those in power down there know that if general economic conditions improve, they would be out of power. The sad thing is that this situation to our south isn't much different from the northeastern parts of our own nation.

I believe that any guest worker program should have a stipulation that if a citizen applies for the job the non citizen loses it.

Well it's about time for Vicente Fox to start resolving Mexico's problems instead of dumping them on our front porch!

Mexico is a very wealthy nation and there is absolutely no reason why Mexicans cannot become successful and profitable citizens in their own country.

It's funny but Tancredo's plan isn't that dissimilar from what President Bush has proposed and yet certain people will trash the President at every opportunity but in the same line they will elevate Tancredo to the level of a god.

Problem is that once illegals are here it is virtually impossible to get rid of them! You have to fine the employers and enforce the laws!

You are right Kelly, it is all a dance. Guess just enforcing the laws currently on the books is too simple for their complex (sarcasm) minds to understand. Every single thing every single one of them propose besides just enforcing current laws is smoke and mirrors and politics as usual.

Oh believe me I am all for enforcement. I just think that when they do this and we all know they will that citizens should come first for jobs not quote, unquote guest workers. If an american goes to a company and applies for a job and they have guest workers employed there then the guest stay is over and the job goes to the citizen.

I tend to read most of the threads on illegal immigration, and it appears to me that it is YOU (et al) that is fixated on Tancredo.

Most people just seem to want a plan that isn't an amnesty, stealth or otherwise. Tancredo is among the few that has that clearly outlined. That doesn't make him a god or anything else but someone that has proposed a plan that isn't an amnesty.
