... it will be possible to 'decommission' natural selection and promote happiness for more than just those at the top of the social ladder, by working to recalibrate the seedier segments of our DNA. To do this we will need female scientists, not the scores of sobbing girls whose sense of self-worth--both social and intellectual--will be demolished to our collective detriment come Sunday.
A relatively thougtful, candid, big picture of life for a young woman at a top school. But, what is the point, really?
That the teaching of evolution, at all levels of society, doesn't seem to show anyone mercy, regardless of social status or income. Especially young women. Decommissioning 'natural selection'? Sheesh.
Somehow, I suspect, that there are many, many guys who like the hand that is dealt them from the impact of the teaching of 'evolution' as it is currently structured.
To the math and info theory whizzes out there who are making the bio-evo priests more worried by the day, I ask ... please hurry up! I'm looking forward to see ya'll drive the Revolution of Evolution.

Skimming through this, I was pretty sure it was written by an ugly chick. When I saw it was written by "matt" I realized the poor child is just another victim of the feminization of America.

Nothing about that picture suggests they are lesbians!

Not all schools have sororities, or at least not the stereotypical Southern variety. No one forces young women to attend sorority-centric schools. Bright young women who are seriously interested in math and science probably apply to other schools. Then again, there are young women who are both smart and social, a la "Legally Blonde." To each her own.

Interesting article. It fits in also with an article posted the other day about differences in male and female brain aptitudes and functions.
As an extension to this..an interesting experiment is to go through a friends old high school yearbook, of people you don't know, and see if you can pick out all the people who got accepted to good colleges, who were considered 'smart' in high school.

But the most telling fact about beauty has to do with what is know known as the waist to hip ratio, the circumference of a woman's waist divided by the circumference of her hips. This measurement is a fairly accurate gauge of the hormonal status of a post-pubertal female, and thus her fertility. Etcoff reports the work of Devendra Singh, a psychologist who has found that this number is more important to men than weight or--astoundingly--breast size. Less surprisingly, she reports that Audrey Hepburn and Marilyn Monroe had the ideal ratio (.7), as do most contemporary supermodels. ('Top' Duke sororities are probably in this ballpark, too.) A 60 inch hip circumference divided by a 42 inch waist equals a hip-to-waist ratio of .7.
Somehow I think there is more to it than this ratio...

Now that is interesting. I'm going to get my wife to look through my yearbook - I'm fascinated to know if she can pick out the "smart" kids just from a photo.
