Chinese hand behind Nepal coup

4 February 2005: Behind King Gyanendra’s coup, the Chinese hand is becoming visible, and it ties to the king’s son, Paras’s two visits to Hong Kong since 24 December.

The Chinese were apparently putting pressure on Nepal to open trade and transit routes between Lhasa and Kathmandu, and to evict the followers of the Dalai Lama and shut down his missions.

In early January, after Paras’s first Hong Kong visit, Nepal ordered closure of the Tibetan cultural centre, and subsequently, King Gyanendra put pressure to arrest and deport the Dalai Lama’s followers to China.

Prime minister Sher Bahadur Deuba, since sacked, conveyed a cabinet meeting to discuss the deportations, but six prominent ministers protested, threatened to resign from the government and party, and launch public demonstrations.

So Deuba expressed his helplessness to Gyanendra, who was unhappy and complained to his aides about the “ineffectiveness” of the PM.

Also at China’s behest, King Gyanendra put a proposal to hastily open the trade routes between Lhasa and Kathmandu, and rejected Deuba’s suggestion to consult India beforehand, saying he was the head of state, but again, the Nepal cabinet opposed him.

Now, after assuming absolute powers through the coup, the king said last night that the trade routes with China would be opened by May, and that Nepal would join the China, Tibet confederation of chambers of commerce.

Officials said the king had warned Deuba to reduce dependence on India, but the PM was not convinced.

So far, China has not condemned the coup, but rather said it would extend all emergency assistance to Nepal.

India probably should be thinking about buying some additional fighter and bomber aircraft and the like.

The King had better tred lightly. The only reason Nepal even exists as an independent nation is because of India. Otherwise it would have went down with Tibet and they would all be speaking Chinese.

Marxist guerillas in countries bordering totalitarian communist countries tend not to spring out of thin air. Always wondered why that is.

I think the Chicoms are starting to "flex their muscles." They may take action in Nepal just to see how we would react, then they could gauge what our response might be if they went after Taiwan.

This is a very complicated story. Is the King pro-Red China, or acting out of a fear of Red China? Does he look towards Red China approvingly, or was he made an offer he couldn't refuse? Something just doesn't add up. Could it be that the Maoist insurgency (or hints at removal of the same) is Red China's trump card. Very confusing--TTS

Indeed. Communist rebels must be eliminated from he entire SOuth Asian region. Sadly India is busy dealing with islamic terrorism, so not enough attention has been given to handling Maoism and Naxalism in the region.

To all:

Let me tell you, just let the Chinese Reds go into Nepal...it would be like our Vietnam and the Soviet Union's(oh yeah, I forgot...THERE IS NO MORE CCCP!) Afghanistan!

Mountains are no place to fight a war!

Remember, Nepal is the ancestral home of the FEARED Gurkha warriors of the British Gurkha Regiments. Those little guys are some true warriors, and although outnumbered a gozillion to one, the Reds would have all they could handle! Besides, with their knowledge of the terrain, their aclimatization to the brutal weather, their fierce warrior ethos, and their proud, proud heritage of calm under fire...those Chinese conscripts would be pissing in their boots!

If China did decide to do something like try to invade Nepal, our response would probably be similar to the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan...spec ops and CIA operatives providing "assistance" and weapons...through a third party of course!

Interesting, Nepal just cleaned out their old weapons lockers. I got a 1873(?) M-R with bayonet for a little over $600. I guess they need money to fight the commies. God Bless them in their efforts.

This is a very complicated story. Is the King pro-Red China, or acting out of a fear of Red China?

You just have to realize that India is ruled by Communists and Nehruvian-Stalinists. Nepal is a small country and it is bound to be insecure, but Nepalis usually don't take any nonsense. When Iraqis killed Nepali hostages, the Nepalis burnt down the mosque at Kathmandu.

There are reports that the Chinese government intimidated the King into doing this, but what of the Maoists? Surely, China is on the side of Maoists. There is no doubt about that.

As for Nepal not trusting India, check out how the Indian government behaved when police surrounded the entire top leadership of the Naxalites (Naxalites are violent Communists who believe in the "revolutionary" way as opposed to the Marxists who are supposedly "peaceful" and stand in elections. Naxalites call themselves Marxist-Leninists or Maoists.)

Cops track down and surround Naxalite leaders, but politicians force them to withdraw.

As you can see, you may have liberal RATS in USA, but at least let us agree that our rats are worse than yours. Ours are sewer rats. I am not surprised that the King of Nepal bypassed India. I hope he doesn't become a stooge of China and I also hope that he cleanses Nepal of Maoists.

Otherwise it would have went down with Tibet and they would all be speaking Chinese.

Don't forget it was Jawaharlal Nehru who gifted Tibet to China and it was Jawaharlal Nehru who demanded on a daily basis in 1952 and 53 that China should be made permanent member of UNSC.

Thanks for the post and the link. Very eye-opening stuff. If it's not too much trouble, please ping me when you run across info re: Nepal, Indian Communists, Red China's role in all of this, etc. After all, inquiring minds want to know! :o)

Best regards--TTS

There is hope in India, despite the activities of Naxalites and politicians. This hope comes from the police who have figured out how to tackle the Naxalites. They hunt them down and kill them in cold blood and then claim that the Naxalites were killed in an "encounter." Brave police!

Of course, organizations like Human Rights Watch and some Marxist fronts which have words like "people's" and "civil liberties" in their name wail and say such action by police amounts to "human rights violations."

They are silent when Naxalites kidnap children or chop the limbs of their victims and throw the limbless victim who is still alive on the street. Here are news reports about 2 separate encounters or "fake encounters" as the "human rights" groups call them. I hope the encounters were fake and not real. That will teach them what a bloody revolution means.

Four Naxals killed in police encounter in AP
Jharkhand encounter ends, 4 naxals killed
