I've been reading VDH since long before it was cool. Go back and read "Fields Without Dreams" sometime (his exceptional book about family farming in California's San Joaquin Valley) and you'll see that he was on to the language-borders-culture problem at least a decade before anybody else really cared. Mr. Hanson deserves a wide, thoughtful audience and his time is now.

"When are the Iraqis going to fight for their own country? When are they going to start shedding their own blood ... as American servicemen with this amount of training are ready to shed theirs," said Sen. Edward Kennedy, D-Massachusetts. Perhaps we should e-mail teddy a copy of this:
OUR SOLDIER IN IRAQ
February 4, 2005 An Update on Chris from Ken Herrera: Hello, Ive learned more about the place Chris will be stationed in Iraq. Its on the southeastern side of Baghdad near an airfield that was once known as the Rashid air base. It was the largest military base in Iraq before the war. Chris base, known as Forward Operating Base Rustimyah, is on the grounds of what was once Iraqs version of West Point. It is about as safe as anyplace can be these days in Iraq but does come under very occasional mortar fire and there was one attempt to penetrate the grounds by a car bomber this past summer. That attempt failed thanks to Iraqi security forces, several of whom gave their lives protecting the American soldiers inside. FOB Rustimyah was also formerly known as Camp Muleskinner and Camp Cuervo, named after a U.S. soldier who died in Iraq. Anyone interested in more information on this base can do a Google search for Camp Cuervo and youll find lots of stuff. Thank you again for your interest, and oh, one other thing, Chris will have Internet access at FOB Rustimyah, so hell soon be checking in almost daily. Monday Ill update you on other details of his deployment that I prefer not to talk about until that time.

Don't you just love it! Now I don't expect to much consistency out of people but, I do expect SOME at least.

Details details details. Teddy can't be bothered with little details like that.
