A Blue Finger Salute

Today is a great day. I watched the live reports from Iraq with a sense of awe and a profound sense of relief. The images of the Iraqi people dancing in the streets holding up their blue inked fingers brought tears to my eyes. Watching videos of Iraqi women lining up to cast their vote made my heart soar. I enjoyed watching all the reports from reporters displaying a genuine respect for the people that braved the terrorists' threats of violence to let their voices be heard. I even enjoyed watching Geraldo.

Despite all of the joy and celebrations, I could not forget those that gave their lives for the promise of this day. I imagine that they are all looking down from Heaven with smiles knowing that their ultimate sacrifice was a driving force that allowed this day to arrive. You will all remain in our hearts for eternity. I am truly proud of our soldiers, our President and our country.

While those of us that dreamed of this day spent our Sunday afternoon basking in the success of the Iraqi elections, there were others that did not share our joy. The mainstream media's coverage was tinged with skepticism and at times, downright sadness. A reporter for CNN anxiously reported that the polling place that she was covering was empty - no poll workers, no voters. What the reporter neglected to tell the viewers was that she was at the wrong location. When she arrived at the correct location, the lines were forming and Iraqi fingers were being dipped in ink. The reporter seemed less exuberant about the success than she was about the imagined failure.

Sen. Ted Kennedy couldn't resist another swipe at our efforts in Iraq. The Senator predicted more gloom and doom. This comes on the heels of his statements blaming our soldiers for the insurgency in Iraq. It does not matter what happens in Kennedy's world. If it's good news, Kennedy plays the quintessential pessimist and downplays the positives. When the news is bad, Kennedy runs as fast as his little legs will carry him to stick his face in front of a microphone and blame America first. In Kennedy's little corner of the universe, there is only bad news and bad results when a Republican President is in charge.

John Kerry displayed his sour grapes once again. Still spouting the same campaign rhetoric about getting other nations involved in order for Iraq to be successful, he cruised the Sunday talk circuit. Kerry proved on Meet the Press that the term "flip flopper" was not just a campaign nickname. Losing the presidency in a legitimate election can be a bitter pill to swallow but Kerry has taken it to an extreme. First by using Condi Rice as a surrogate for his Bush bashing, then by his negative comments on the Iraqi elections. I am sure that he had "a plan" but it did not include sitting on the sidelines after January 20, 2005.

So today was a good day and a bad day -- good day for Iraqis, for our soldiers, for our president and our country. A bad day for the sore losers on the left, the countries that refuse to help out in Iraq and the terrorists. All Americans should be proud of all that we have accomplished in Iraq. To those that still think the war in Iraq was a mistake and unjust, the people of Iraq are giving you the finger -- a blue-inked finger.

I painted my finger this morning, and I'm not the only one walking around the University of Kansas with a colorful digit.

To all the Iraqi citizens who literally risked their lives in order to cast their votes, I would just like to say:

Well Done!

If we used the blue ink in this country we would probably see some of the blue states (like Pennsylvania) turn into red states.

Illinois as well since voter fraud would be wiped out there.

Washington State as well...namely Seattle.

Great video. My favorite image is the one near the end of the woman with the blue finger making the peace sign. It speaks loudly of what has been accomplished.
