A good friend called me a few hours ago terribly upset. Her two sons, both United States Marines, were in Washington DC last night (Saturday) with their dates. They went to the Hawk and Dove, which is a Capitol Hill watering hole.
Now before I go any farther here, understand that I know these two Marines and these are really good kids, hardly the rowdy type -- both went through OCS and are just not the troublemaking types.
At any rate, they were NOT ALLOWED entry into the Hawk and Dove. They were told that the military WAS NOT WELCOME and that especially was true for MARINES.
Is your blood boiling yet???? Mine is. I cannot reveal who these Marines' parents are, but let me tell you, my Freeper brethren, this is a patriotic family who has done much for our nation. (Their mother spends many weekends at Walter Reed with the injured soldiers and even had a house full of them over for Thanksgiving.) I'm telling you, this is an extraordinary family that has given much in service to our country.
So here's the deal. I want this bar to know of our displeasure with their disrespectful behavior toward these two young Marines.
At the very least, I'd like to see a round for these young men on the house and a profuse apology from the owner.
Once upon a time in the more rowdy times on Capitol Hill (1975+) the Marines at the E Street Barracks (8th & E SE) would frequent the bars in Southeast. There were many "gay" bars there at the time and the Marines used to cut up a little rough.
None the less, this does not sound like the Hawk 'N Dove, but some a**hole waitress/bartender who was doing a dou**bag imitation.
Regards,
Now get about 50 Marines together and go there and see what happens.
Apparently it's policy now.
As long as they have four sets of handcuffs, one for each bedpost.
Dupont tends to be a little strange...
I worked in a largely gay retail environment on West 14th Street in Manhattan (in the "Meat Packing" district). My coworkers went crazy during fleet week talking about all the "hot sailors" who were in town.
A ping for the Hawk and Dove who don't seem to have a website, but have a phone.

The Washington Post likes them, lousy food, lousy service, but it's not for the expense account folk. Teddy won't be trolling here.
Hawk and Dove Restaurant is the archetypal Capitol Hill bar not the mythical kind where movers and shakers make big deals over expense-account meals. Instead, it's a place where staffers, both Democrat and Republican, gather to gripe about their bosses. (Never by name, of course. The etiquette is to refer to "my member," in case the other guys are eavesdropping.)
The bar's four rooms provide plenty of options room for a post-softball gathering, a pool game, a quick drink or an almost-quiet conversation in front of the fireplace. Sandwiches and burgers are available mercifully late, until 11 p.m. weeknights or midnight weekends. There are also substantial nightly food specials and a generous $6.95 late-night breakfast served until the wee hours.
Service can be spotty, to say the least sometimes, waiters are acceptably attentive, but at other times, you can see the staff is more interested in catching up with friends than in actually serving food or drink. Could it be because this bar automatically adds the tip for groups of four or more?

Let me drop a few pounds and drag out my old blues....see if they turn away Marines with air cover. Any soldiers want to put on some greens and make it a three service joint op?
Disrespect PING!
Is that good or bad, TR?
I'd be a patron, every night, EGS.
Wow. Now that sounds like a fun experiment!
So, how did this all play out today? Any updates for us?
Is this a bar or a bath house?
Let's suppose, just for the sake of argument, that in the past the Hawk and Dove had had trouble with a few young Black males, starting fights etc., and as a result the insurance company said that to keep their coverage, they would have to refuse service.
Does anyone here think that the Hawk and Dove would consider -- even for a minute -- refusing service to people (even people of the same race and sex as some who cause trouble) because of someone's race? or sex? Or, that if they did, they would not be the subject of a lawsuit that would end up with them paying lots and lots and lots of money.
Lame. Just Lame.
Not just lame, chs68. The scenario you describe would bring Jesse "Payola" Jackson, Dan Rather, Chrissie Matthews, et. al., onto televison screens everywhere to decry the unfair (and it is) stereotyping of a whole segment of society.
Not to mention most likely an actionable (civil rights) offense.
I never caught the number? I want to call.I really want to call!
You can't reveal them? What kind of marines are they? I appreciate your outrage--and will share it if this is true--but this has urban legend written all over it.
In a previous post in this thread someone linked the hawk & dove website. You may want to look back at other posts to find the link.
It's post 26.
