Sacramento -- One of the Legislature's highest-ranking Dem- ocrats suggested Monday that embattled Secretary of State Kevin Shelley should resign, a dramatic sign that support from Shelley's own political party is quickly evaporating.
State Senate Majority Leader Gloria Romero, D-Los Angeles, told The Chronicle she expects Shelley to resign and that it would be better for the party if he did. She questioned whether he can effectively run elections in California.
Shelley faces multiple investigations about a fund-raising scandal and allegations of misconduct in office. He is scheduled to testify under oath before a legislative hearing next week about a state audit that concluded he mismanaged federal voting act money.
People who have spoken with Shelley recently say he has discussed quitting and what he might do after leaving office.
"I don't even know why he would want to stay,'' Romero said, saying publicly what other Democrats said privately Monday.

Uh, did someone say DEMOCRAT ???
This is unusual. Usually the libs circle the wagons, the media doesn't report the matter and it's left to us. He must have been too cooperative helping Arnold get elected.
The Crats are a criminal party. Thuggery is what they do, and the bigger thug the better. Like Clinton and Teddy. I would think they would be trumpeting this guy for higher office.
Whatever is up it must be really serious to motivate the Democrats to sacrifice one of their own. An obvious answer is that Romero and others don't want further inquiry.
Romero's call for Shelly's resignation may signal that she doesn't want any more light shed on the connection between the leadership of the Democrat party, illegal immigration and organized labor. She simply wants Shelly to go away quietly.
One can speculate that a thorough public examination, forced by the electorate if Shelly fights back, would produce evidence that Romero asked Shelly to initiate the federally funded registration drive in her district that is now considered illegal.
In that case, I hope Shelley fights to the bitter end. ;-)
