JOHNNY CARSON BREAKS SILENCE: KNOCKS FOX FOR TOO MUCH PATRIOTISM AT SUPER BOWL; THINKS BUSH IN ENRON COVER-UP

**Exclusive Details**

Don't look for Johnny Carson to make an appearance during NBC's 75TH Anniversary Special -- even though NBC head Bob Wright has made a personal plea.

"That ain't gonna happen," the retired Carson tells ESQUIRE magazine. "That ain't gonna happen."

The retired funnyman throws cold water on Wright's May Sweep dreams.

"He means well. I know NBC means well. But I am retired. I ain't going back on television. There's no need for me to go back. It's gonna be one of those self-congratulatory things. Look how good we are! I'm just not going to do it!"

Reporter Bill Zehme has been courting Carson for years and the relationship has paid off in spades: On May 8th, ESQUIRE rolls out an exhaustive exclusive interview with the press-shy Carson, running 10 pages.

Carson rips FOX for its Super Bowl red-white-and-blue coverage following 9/11: "When you look at the production -- give me a break!" Carson says. "Norman Mailer said something about patriotism being a nice thing, but just ease up a bit... It's nice to live in this country, but ease up!"

Carson takes on Bush: "Can you believe this Enron mess? I love how his good friend 'Kenny Boy' suddenly turned into 'Mr. Lay'... Give me a break! It will be a long time before we ever understand what's going on behind that story."

Carson has nightmare dreams that he still is host of the TONIGHT SHOW: "It's show time and I am going on -- and I've got nothing to say! I wake up in a sweat!"

He tells Zehme that the only time he wished he was back on the air and not retired was during the Monica Lewinsky mess.

"It's John. I regret it now," Carson said to Wright in a phone call. "I haven't seen such an abundance of material in my life!"

Jay makes real good money off of his standup gigs. He still makes appearances.

Standup gigs? LMAO. Leno doesn't do standup gigs as a livelihood anymore. Leno slogged through the standup cesspool for 20 years in the whimsical dream that he'd one day get the Tonight Show job. The best gig in the world. The Tonight Show is a fulltime obligation with enough stress, demands and creative expression for any man.

I'll ping you when the Leno/Letterman/O'Brien road show gets underway.

So, that picture of him would be around early or late 2004 do you think?

Read it again. I refuse to put a sarcasm tag at the end of my comments.

I wasn't replying specifically to you. Just posting back to all the people in the thread for their comments.

Well, I only commented about Sam Kinison. I know nothing about Carson and even less about Leno.
I just don't want anyone to think I was getting into any arguments.

I still miss Sam.

Carson takes on Bush: "Can you believe this Enron mess? I love how his good friend 'Kenny Boy' suddenly turned into 'Mr. Lay'... Give me a break! It will be a long time before we ever understand what's going on behind that story."

I have remembered him saying this ever since he said it. I won't be too harsh in light of his death, but it is confounding that everyone was so quick to connect Bush to Lay, when the rise and beginning of the fall of Enron happened on Clinton's watch. When did Ken Lay stay at the White House? During the Clinton years. Who prosecuted the Enron principals? The Bush DOJ. But, by God, Bush gave him a nickname, so it's a Bush scandal.

Rarely will a democrat donate without fanfare.
I am still of the opinion that Johnny was NOT a lib
or even left of center. His midwest roots indicate
he's one of us, plus his viewing of Fox News Channel.

Add to that his close friendship with David Letterman,
who my daughter insists is a staunch Republican as told
to her by a mutual close friend of DL's.

Very, very late. The Aviator opened somewhere between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Yep, ENRON is a Clinton stinkyfish. That's why there is little in-depth coverage of the scandal following the initial headline splash worldwide. Below the surface we find Clinton and cronies..... sshhhhhhhh

If you can connect to Imus's radio show,
please FR mail the link to me. I am using
Hildy's laptop computer and it's a dial up
and awkward for me regardless.

PLUS, altho downloaded, I cannot log into/onto
the other site! Yikes. I am miserable about that.

The Ciggie Gnatzies can kiss my ashtray. They don't smoke, neither do I, so leave me the hell alone. I will defend smokers rights to smoke til the day I die.

Anyone remember the "Johnny Carbon" skit by Firesign Theatre?

With the Ed McMahon dummy that sat on the couch and yelled "Hi Yo, Ha Ha Ha Ha" at random moments?

There's a ton of Firesign material out on the Internet, but Johnny Carbon seems lost to comedic history. I can't find mention of him anywhere.
