To: plain talk
I think you've finally seen the light even if you are unwilling to admit it. The facts as I see them:
- Geneva Convention protections do not apply to terrorists.
- Known terrorists were sent to Guantanamo, where if they are tortured, or drawn and quartered for that matter, no one will shed a tear.
- Not all Iraqis are terrorists. Not all Iraqis are on the other side. Some support us. Some don't support us, but they don't support the terrorists either.
- The Abu Ghraib prisoners were for the most part either common criminals or suspected, but not proven, terrorists. As such, they were entitled to protection under the 4th Geneva Convention as civilians.
- The Abu Ghraib guards were out of control and had little to no officer supervision. Officers are paid to supervise and should be held responsible for the actions of their subordinates.
- Court Martials need to be held for what happened at Abu Ghraib, but not just enlisted, some officers were responsible as well up to possibly the level of Gen Sanchez. Certainly Gen Karpinski needs to be held accountable (more than just being "allowed to retire").
- The SECDEF is not responsible for what went on at Abu Ghraib and does not need to resign.
- Most of what went on there was simply coercive interrogations and did not amount to much (panties on the head-type stuff).
- Some of what went on there was criminal abuse.
- Some of the abuse was so over the top abusive that it could be construed as "torture" (but very little, though it did exist).
- That which was actually torture should be fully prosecuted.
- The United States is holding its people accountable for any abuse they may commit in the war zone. No such accountability is taking place on the other side.
- The U.S. and the other side are not morally comparable.
