I had a girl friend back in the 1970's that introduced me to a couple she knew - he was an Ensign in the Navy stationed in San Diego.
He was an up-an-comer and his wife was a gorgeous scandanivian blond. They were invited out on the Captain's Gig for a day of fishing offshore of San Diego. This was a big deal because the Capt. was the Capt. of an aircraft carrier.
Fishing wasn't so hot and to top it off, an oil line broke on the Capt's Gig and they were dead in the water. The Motorman tried in vain to seal the leak - and they were about to call for another shore boat to come out to rescue them - and event that would have been vastly embarassing to the Capt....and probably career-ending for the motorman when the Ensign's wife whispered to her husband - "could this help" and pulled a tampon out of her purse.
To make a long story short, they put the tampon in the oil line and it sealed up the leak perfectly. They were able to continue the day fishing - actually caught some fish - and proceed back to port normally.
The Ensign and his wife were invited to every high-level military gathering thereafter and his career was on a rocket ride.
His wife complained that she couldn't go shopping without everyone whispering and pointing - "that's the gal that fixed the Captains gig".
