HONOLULU (AP) - A nuclear submarine ran aground about 350 miles south of Guam, injuring several sailors, one of them critically, the Navy said.
There were no reports of damage to the USS San Francisco's reactor plant, which was operating normally, the Navy said.
Jon Yoshishige, a spokesman for the U.S. Pacific Fleet based at Pearl Harbor, said the Friday afternoon incident is under investigation and the 360-foot submarine was headed back to its home port in Guam.
Details on the sailors' injuries were not immediately available. The sub has a crew of 137, officials said.
Military and Coast Guard aircraft from Guam were en route to monitor the submarine and assist if needed, the Navy said.
Guam is a U.S. territory about 3,700 miles southwest of Hawaii.

It depends on how big, how fast.
No doubt, the boat would feel it. You'd likely slow down, if not stop depending on your speed.
I've been below an Cat 4 Hurricane, but that isn't the same. (We were at 200 feet and the boat was rolling though 40 degrees---not fun AT ALL. I'd feel sorry for any skimmer riding that one out.)

A big no no in the navy. The captain will be captain no more and perhaps a few others.
Right, but the "sandbar" story makes for good cover if we just rammed a red sub into Davy Jones' Locker.

I worked at Electric Boat up in Groton (before I went in the Army!) running the 400 and 800 lines on the USS Corkscrew. Those are some tough boats; we had them come in regularly with dents in the hull, but otherwise intact. A litte 'chicken' with Ivan perhaps? (This was in the 80s)
If this boat was doing a speed run into Guam, sonar would have been next to useless. But I wouldn't want to be this Captain in front of the BOI. Those are never fun.
I was out of the service by the 70s and was totally disinterested in reading the news by then.
I don't remember hearing about the Pogy. I did a search on the Pogy and could find no reference to the Pogy running aground or hitting an underwater mountain. Could you please elaborate?
Yeah. Followon Operational Tests on Alaska (732B). Only Mk 48s we shot were exercise loads in TREs in Hawaii. Never had the "priveledge" of dealing with SUBROCS.
