Arrest in Teen Runaway's Murder (raped, murdered, cut up, then burned)

A 29-year-old man was charged Wednesday with killing an aspiring teenage model who left home early last month after an argument with her mother.

Authorities alleged that Lamar Haymes raped and killed 15-year-old Deanna Wright McIntosh at a house in Lansdowne just blocks from her family home, then cut up her body, put it in a steel drum and burned it with help from an acquaintance.

Haymes was charged with kidnapping, rape, first-degree murder, abuse of corpse and other counts. Delaware County District Attorney G. Michael Green said he would consider seeking the death penalty.

"This is a gruesome crime," he told reporters at a news conference.

Anwaar Malik Gettys, 23, who also lived at the Lansdowne house, was accused of helping to dispose of the body and charged with abuse of a corpse, tampering with evidence, conspiracy and other counts.

According to a police affidavit, Gettys said Haymes had told him he had killed and chopped up someone, and he helped Haymes take the steel drum to a vacant lot and saw Haymes place wood and pour gasoline in the container. Gettys led police to the barrel in which the charred remains were found, the affidavit said.

Wright McIntosh was a sophomore at Penn Wood High School who pursued theater, dancing and modeling and sang at Mount Olive Baptist Church in West Philadelphia. Her father is a retired FBI agent, Jim McIntosh, whom she saw regularly.

She may have met Haymes last summer when she worked part-time at a local pizza parlor, said her mother, Darlene Wright, 50, of Yeadon.

The teenager left her home on Dec. 2 to stay with a friend after an argument over how she had spoken to her mother, Wright said. The next day, mother and daughter met with a school guidance counselor about lapsed schoolwork, and Deanna agreed to come home, Wright said.

But she never returned. Wright filed a missing persons report the next day.

Police said a witness told investigators he saw Haymes and Wright McIntosh together at the Lansdowne house on the evening of Dec. 3, hours after she left school for the last time. In a Dec. 31 police interview, Haymes acknowledged that the girl spent the night on a futon at the house, the affidavit said.

The witness said he returned the next day to find Haymes cleaning, and a strong smell of bleach in the house, the affidavit said. Haymes allegedly told the other man not to sit on the coach because it had been shampooed, the document said.

Haymes was already in custody. According to the Philadelphia Daily News, he was paroled from state prison in February after serving more than three years for probation violations on theft and stolen property charges. He reported regularly to his parole officer until Dec. 11, when Philadelphia police arrested him for allegedly driving a stolen car, the paper said.

It was not immediately clear whether Haymes and Gettys had attorneys

THE SUSPECTED killer and the choir girl had known each other for years from the neighborhood, friends and neighbors said.

They got to know each other better once she began working at Pizza Paradise, in Yeadon, last summer, friends said.

Although outwardly he conducted himself like any another customer, friends say Lamar Price, aka Lamar Haymes, secretly lusted after Deanna Wright-McIntosh, 15, who was a beauty about half his age.

So, when she got into an argument with her mother on Dec. 3, he seized the opportunity to play Good Samaritan and offered her a place to stay until things cooled down, neighbors said.

She naively accepted, having no way of knowing that, as one associate later told police, he liked to "pick up girls, including prostitutes, and beat and rape them," according to court documents.

Last Thursday, witnesses led cops to Deanna's chopped-up, charred body, stuffed into a drum in a vacant lot on 63rd Street near Arch in West Philadelphia.

Price has not been charged in Deanna's murder, but search warrants for the house on Linden Avenue, in Lansdowne, where he was staying, shed new light on his role in her mysterious disappearance. They paint a chilling portrait of how Price allegedly recruited several people to help him burn, move and dispose of her body, and how he'd told others that he'd "killed and chopped up someone."

The documents say Deanna was last seen alive, with Price, on Dec. 3, a Friday, at the Linden Avenue house. A neighbor said the family who lived there had taken Price in because he was "down on his luck." Price told police that Deanna had stayed there that Friday and Saturday night on a futon in an upstairs bedroom, the court documents said.

Another person, identified only as "Witness 3," told authorities on Monday that Deanna and Price had been sitting on the couch at the house between 4 and 6 p.m. on Dec. 3 while Price ordered food, the documents show.

The witness left them there about 10 p.m. but returned the following afternoon and noticed a "strong odor of bleach" in the house, the documents said.

"Lamar Haymes was cleaning the house and told Witness 3 not to sit on the couch because it was just shampooed," the document said.

Price, 29, is in jail in Philadelphia on an unrelated charge. Delaware County District Attorney Mike Green had scheduled a news conference for yesterday afternoon on the case but canceled it. Green issued a statement late in the day saying he was waiting for further "forensic analysis" of material collected during the investigation.

Cops said tips were still flowing in.

"Just in the last 12 hours, more leads came in that need to be investigated and people that need to be interviewed," Yeadon Police Chief Don Molineux, whose agency has been leading the probe, said yesterday afternoon. "We're now in another mode, gathering physical evidence and statements to move forward with the prosecution of this."

The victim's family declined to comment yesterday.

Price and Deanna could not have been more different. She was tall, thin, beautiful and popular, and had recently placed second in a modeling contest. She was a sophomore at Penn Wood High School and in the choir at Mount Olive Baptist Church, at 37th Street near Wallace, which was founded by her grandfather. Her father, Jim McIntosh, is a retired FBI agent.

Price is about 6-foot tall and 300 pounds. His nicknames are "Fatmar" and "Big Nasty" because of his girth, friends said. He has been in and out of jail for years, with his most recent stint ending last February, when he was paroled from state prison, officials said. He served more than three years of a two- to four-year sentence for probation violations on theft and receiving stolen property charges, records show.

Once he was released, Price was a model parolee, officials said. He was on home electronic monitoring until June, then reported every other week to his parole officer, officials said. His last scheduled meeting was on Dec. 13, which he didn't make, said Lauren Taylor, a spokeswoman for the Pennsylvania Board of Probation and Parole.

His parole officer soon discovered it was because he was in jail. Price was arrested on Dec. 11 in Philadelphia, accused of drug dealing, driving under the influence and unauthorized use of a car, court records show.

Seven days earlier, Deanna's mother reported her only child missing to Yeadon police, according to the search warrants. Deanna was first classified as a missing person, then an endangered missing person, cops said. Fliers were plastered all over the area.

At one point, a Pennsylvania State Police helicopter was used to search for her, Molineux said. And two FBI profilers who had worked on the Elizabeth Smart kidnapping case assisted police. They were present when police located her body, Molineux said.

But the big break didn't come until mid-December, when a man called Ridley Township police and told them an acquaintance had told him that he had beaten a girl to death with his fists, raped her, cut her into pieces with an ax and put her into a bag, authorities said.

That man's statement soon led to witnesses whose statements gave authorities enough evidence to get a search warrant for the house where Price was staying and for a blue van parked in the driveway, police said.

Two witnesses, identified as "Witness 1 and Witness 2" in the search warrants, said they had bought a container of gasoline from a gas station, at 58th Street and Baltimore Avenue, in Philadelphia, in early December. The next day, they drove Price to the Lansdowne train station to collect a "large green metal container," which they put in the first witness' car, the warrant says.

The day after that, Witness 2 said Price asked him to help him take the container to a vacant lot on 63rd Street near Arch, then helped him place the container next to a large tree in the lot.

"Witness 2 stated that he observed Lamar [Price] place wood and gasoline into the container," the warrant says. "Witness 2 stated that he had previously heard Lamar [Price] state that he had killed someone."

Last Thursday, Witness 2 took cops to that vacant lot, where they found Deanna's remains in a green container with a lid.

That wasn't all this witness had to say. He also told cops that around the time of Deanna's disappearance, Price told him that he had "killed and chopped up someone at 40 Linden Ave.," the warrant says. The witness said Price also had told him he had put a large trash bag containing human remains in a blue panel van that was parked in the driveway.

Cops searched the Linden Avenue house, a two-story, light green brick building with brown shutters, last Thursday night and again on Monday.

They took swabs of red stains from inside the front door and from a broken mirror in the basement; sections of seat cushions from two different couches in the home; a Sanyo cell phone they found inside the cushions of one couch; an empty 3-quart bottle of bleach; mops and several different knives, according to the search warrant returns.

They took only two things from the blue 1979 Chevrolet van: a Walter .380 pistol and a rusted machete with a chopped wooden handle.

Ugh, the worst. How can somebody do that to another human.

And I'm always amazed that these body choppers can find friends to help them dispose of the body. Scary.

What a sad and maddening story.

I saw a picture of this girl in the newspaper yesterday, beautiful, without makeup.

The situation with her mother seems like one that happens all the time. She was no permanent runaway. That wouldn't make it any easier of course, but this really has shocked the community.

I think they will. The black community hates crime as much as any other. I'm in the Philadelphia area and when I see these crimes on TV, the black community is just as angry and articulate as any other. They held a moving vigil last night in spite of the horrible weather and were outspoken about their anger and grief.

Only capital punishment fits the crime. He might enjoy prison like Richard Speck did. The killer of eight nurses kept a photo of one of his victims in his prison cell, bragged about how he could get any kind of drugs in prison, met with the press, develooped breasts via harmones to better please his sweetie, and lived a long life. His victims families had to pay for his three square meals per day and his upkeep.

In what kind of relationship could you say to a friend: " Hey I killed somebody and chopped them up. Could you give me a hand burning the pieces after work?"

Sadly her father was a former FBI agent...when I first heard that, I thought that there could have been a connection, maybe retribution...but it looks like the murder was just a lifetime criminal.

Remains of former FBI agent's daughter found in drum in Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA The charred remains of a missing teenage girl have been found in a rusted steel drum in Philadelphia.

The girl was the daughter of a retired F-B-I agent. Fifteen-year-old Deanna Wright McIntosh was last seen December third with a friend at a nail salon near her home. Her death has been ruled a homicide.

Police say they've questioned a man who gave them a tip. Prosecutors aren't saying if he's a suspect.

The girl's father retired from the F-B-I's Philadelphia bureau about two years ago. Detectives say they don't believe the girl's death is connected to her father's work.
