An apartment break-in this morning left a woman and her 11-year-old son with gunshot wounds and a suspect clinging to life.

The woman's husband told police he shot the robber after he burst into the apartment and opened fire on the family.

The incident began about 6:30 a.m. at an apartment in the 9900 block of Windmills Lake Boulevard in southeast Houston. Homicide investigator D.L. Robertson said the husband had just arrived home in and closed the door behind him when three suspects kicked it in.

As the man, his wife and their son tried to flee into a back bedroom, the suspects began shooting. The woman and boy were hit, but the man made it into the back bedroom, where he grabbed his own gun and returned fire, Robertson said.

One of the suspects was critically wounded and was lying just outside the apartment door when police arrived. The 27-year-old man was rushed to Ben Taub Hospital, where he's in very critical condition. The woman and boy were also taken to Ben Taub, but their wounds are not life-threatening.

Police are searching for the other two suspects, who may have sped away in a gray car, Robertson said. Police don't know if either of them was hurt in the shootout, but investigators are checking out a report of a gunshot victim turning up at an area hospital.

Investigators are also interviewing the husband, who has been cooperative, Robertson said. He believes he may have been followed home by the suspects this morning, Roberston said.

99.9999% chance this was drug-related.

Score one for the good guys.

That dad will be able to say that he did all he could to protect his family. Glad his wife and son's wounds are not bad. I sincerley hope the perp takes a permanent turn for the worse.

No doubt.

When you mess with illegal drugs, crime, etc, your chances of becoming a victim INCREASE roughly 80%.

Hopefully, the perp will have the grace to die before he costs the Texas taxpayers too much money.

Lucky thing this happened in Texas, and not NY, where the victim would be locked up for gun ownership and sued to the tune of several million.

I wish the woman and the boy a speedy recovery, and the criminal a long and agonizing death.

I'm disappointed, but with a little more training maybe next time he'll be able to make all three DOA. This is a case for being able to legally own automatic weapons.

I hope the criminal stays alive long enough to rat out the other two.

The 27-year-old man [suspect] was rushed to Ben Taub Hospital, where he's in very critical condition.

I wish I was that ambulance driver. I would have figured some way not to "rush" to the hospital.

Not necessarily. More likely there's some drug interest on the perp side, but they may have marked the husband as easy cash, or there could have been a rumor about the husband's having money or jewelry. Its happened before that a mistaken estimate of the victim's wealth or possessions has led to a home invasion.

You want the guy to live long enough to rat out his buddies then he can die.

He could have also just been returning home after a good run at an all night poker or dice game.

Here in Upstate NY we own guns and when people break into our homes with guns, we shoot back.

NYC, on the other hand... well, just remember Ron Dixon.

Any news on whether or not Katie Couric has asked the soon-to-be-dead criminal if he's in favor of the Second Amendment?

I took my clue from the fact that it was an apartment on the southeast side of the city. It's not the sort of area where you're prone to overestimate the wealth of the residents. We'll see.

You've got on-the-ground knowledge of the neighborhood. That certainly helps in figuring the odds.

See, just another incident that could have been prevented by more gun control. (/sarcasm)
Hopefully the mans family will fully recover! Sounds like he may have taken another bad guy off the streets.

Score one for the good guys.

I'm just guessing that as the facts get sorted out the dad won't be such a good guy.
