Senate Coverage -- (January '05)
The Senate & House ^ | 1-04-05 | US CONGRESS

Posted on 01/04/2005 4:53:00 AM PST by OXENinFLA

Since "Free Republic is an online gathering place for independent, grass-roots conservatism on the web. We're working to roll back decades of governmental largesse, to root out political fraud and corruption, and to champion causes which further conservatism in America.", I and others think it's a good idea to centralize what the goes on in the Senate (or House).

So if you see something happening on the Senate/House floor and you don't want to start a new thread to ask if anyone else just heard what you heard, you can leave a short note on who said what and about what and I'll try and find it the next day in THE RECORD. Or if you see a thread that pertains to the Senate, House, or pretty much any GOV'T agency please link your thread here.

If you have any suggestions for this thread please feel free to let me know.

Here's a few helpful links.

C-SPAN what a great thing. Where you can watch or listen live to most Government happenings.

C-SPAN 1 carries the HOUSE.

C-SPAN 2 carries the SENATE.

C-SPAN 3 (most places web only) carries a variety of committee meetings live or other past programming.

OR FEDNET has online feed also.

A great thing about our Government is they make it really easy for the public to research what the Politicians are doing and saying (on the floor anyway).

THOMAS where you can see a RECORD of what Congress is doing each day. You can also search/read a verbatim text of what each Congressmen/women or Senator has said on the floor or submitted 'for the record.' [This is where the real juicy stuff can be found.]

Also found at Thomas are Monthly Calendars for the Senate Majority and Senate Minority

And Monthly Calendar for the House Majority

Roll Call Votes can be found here.

Here we go again.

Tuesday, Jan 4, 2005

The Senate & House will convene the first session of the 109th Congress at 12 noon.

Wow, I just realized I've started doing this type of thread LAST January. Where does the time go?

Senate Coverage (1-26/1-30-04) HR 3108 'Pension Funding Equity Act'

Senate Coverage -- (November/Dec '04)

PS. I'm leaving the thread name alone. I thought about changing it because I don't really "cover" the Senate but I started calling it "Senate Coverage" and instead of changing it and thus changing the search matrix I'm keeping it just the way it is.

" Congress is back today @ high noon!!!"

Will we be treated to a race to see who can sound the most compassionate, I wonder.

Yeah, I'm sure the Tsunami will be the topic du jour but I'm betting when 'Da Swimmer' stumbles up to the lectern he'll going right back to Bush bashing via Abu Ghraib.

Kerry's skills on display in Mideast trip

Hey, and it looks like once again Kerry will be a no-show in the Senate.

What a nice way to greet the incoming Freshman Senators....

"once again Kerry will be a no-show in the Senate."

The Senate is not "high profile" enough for one of his stature. It's been interesting to watch the re-caps of 2004, most especially the Kerry appearances (thank you, God and American voters; he is not president). Kerry can't figure out how to touch people. The attempts are always awkward and kind of sad to see.

It didn't take Reid very long to complain about how "long" it took for Bush to respond to the tsunami disaster---he has prolly been writing his remarks since Nov. 2.

Did you notice that when Barak Obama went up to be sworn in and sign the book he was carrying a big Bible? Do we have a Jesse Jackson in the Senate? Do I even have to ask? Nope----

I forgot to thank you for the thread----as you know, I am "addicted" to the Senate coverage and will wander over to the House coverage also.

I can't wait for this session to get going--I have a feeling there are going to be some knock-down drag out fights.

I dread Thursday, though, cause I think the hearing for Gonzalez may take on the aspects of a public lynching if the Dems have their way!!!

I'm still not sure what religion he is.............

In Indonesia, I'd spent 2 years at a Muslim school, 2 years at a Catholic school. In the Muslim school, the teacher wrote to tell mother I made faces during Koranic studies. In the Catholic school, when it came time to pray, I'd pretend to close my eyes, then peek around the room. Nothing happened. No angels descended. Just a parched old nun and 30 brown children, muttering words. Sometimes the nun would catch me, and her stern look would force my lids back shut. But that didn't change how I felt inside. Saw his acceptance speech and he and his wife are members of the United Church of Christ which is what was formed from the joining of the Congregationalist and Reformed Evangelicals along time ago.

I guess it could have been the Koran, but it looked like a Bible. It was hardback book sized and had those "shiny" looking pages because the light reflected off the top of the pages and there was a tassel hanging out like a bookmark.

I don't know if it was a prop, to use during the swearing in ceremony or if he regulary carries it around. I didn't notice any of the other Senators carrying Bibles, though.

I don't have anything against someone that carries, reads, prays with a Bible---I just don't like people that use them as props to make them look a "certain" way. I think of Jesse Jackson everytime, because he is one of the most un-reverendlike "reverend" I have seen.

I have read over the last few weeks a mention of Gonzalez hearing and I'm pretty sure the articles said this Thursday.
I could be wrong, I'll see if I can find out.

BTW, right now they have been on an interminable Quorum Call and that is what I HATE about the Senate---they take these looooooooong Quorum calls and then Frist comes on and just starts naming the #'s of the bills that have BEEN AGREED TO. Of course, we didn't get to see anything, I guess it was all in the "back room". Why even have TV coverage?
