A Spirit That Lives On....Orlas King: The Neutron Man.

It is getting toward the end of the year and we all reflect on the year that past around this time. We talk about the good and the bad. The beginnings and the ends. Many Ohio State Buckeye fans out there knew Orlas King. He was known as "The Neutron Man." He would have his seat right by The Best Damn Band In The Land during football games. The band would strike up the Neutron Dance, and the Neutron Man would dance as 100,000 plus in the crowd would stand and clap as he was shakin down the house. Neutron Man would not just show up at football games. He would show up at those sporting events we don't hear about on the local news at night. I was fortunate to sit behind Neutron Man at an Ohio State game in the mid-1990's. He made sure to point at all of us as the game began to make sure we were ready to cheer the Buckeyes onto victory. I would not see Neutron Man until September 2nd of this year. Many Bush-Cheney supporters gathered to watch President Bush's acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention at a party hall in Grove City. A couple of former Buckeyes were in attendance, Greg Frey and Mike Lanese. Our Congresswoman, Deborah Pryce, was there after doing a great job at the Bush campaign event at Nationwide Arena the day before. The Neutron Man was there as well. The group that night was seen at the RNC in New York. A picture of that can be seen here at the Ohio Republican Party website. http://www.ohiogop.org/News/PhotoGallery.aspx The photo is at the lower right hand corner and Neutron Man is on the left. I remember leaving that night and seeing Neutron Man in the parking lot. I rolled down the window to say "Go Bucks and Go Bush!" The Neutron Man responded with a point and "Yeah!"

Orlas King, "The Neutron Man" would pass away a month later. The band played the Neutron Dance one last time during the next home game. The crowd danced away with some tears. He left the world with many friends and fans alike. His last home football game was won by the Buckeyes on a 55-yard field goal by Mike Nugent.

If Neutron Man worked out some sort of plan when he got to heaven, I think it worked. His President, George W. Bush would win Ohio and the election. His beloved team, The Ohio State Buckeyes would win that last game of the year at the Horseshoe over that team from the state up north.

God Bless Orlas King, "The Neutron Man"
