No amount of outside criticism could damage Maureen Dowd like this childish piece of profound embarrassment.

There is just nothing I can add to this, other than my expression of amazement. No matter the level of puerile trash I've seen from her before, this one descends to new depths. Has she no friends at the Times who could have charitably rejected this piece?

That's very compassionate of you, and likely very perceptive as well. I think you're right. How completely unhappy does someone have to be to be writing some of the stuff she's written? No doubt she's made her own bed, though.

I would say that she is angry now. She's gone past denial -- "Michael Douglas will marry me soon." Next is bargaining. I'm not sure who she'll bargain with, since God isn't in her worldview. Then comes depression. Finally -- acceptance.
