Annan's Post at the U.N. May Be at Risk, Officials Fear

UNITED NATIONS, Dec. 3 - United Nations officials fear that Secretary General Kofi Annan may have lost the confidence of the organization's most powerful constituent, the United States. They also say members of the Bush administration may want Mr. Annan to resign because of his disagreements with Washington about Iraq and the growing scandal over the Iraq oil-for-food program.

Concern at high levels of the secretariat was reinforced by President Bush's pointed refusal on Thursday to express confidence in Mr. Annan's continuing in office. He also linked American financial support to the United Nations to a full accounting of the program and Saddam Hussein's diversion of over $20 billion while under United Nations sanctions.

I know we've discussed the death out of this subject but I just love the first sentence on this one.

Now Kofi wants President Bush's support so he can keep his job?

Someone should tell him the expression American's use about what paybacks are.

The only thing he has to fear, is fear itself.

Kofi has been seen Testing his Weenie Vending Machine. Looks like Kofi may be out in front of the UN instead of in the UN. Honking his Weenies' at Lunch Time.

The trouble is, given Bush's recent appointments and actions he is likely to support the man. May God stop him in his tracks.

Any secretary-general who takes one side where the Security Council is split, and forgets that, all in all, he is merely a functionary, is riding for a fall. In the case of Dag Hammerskjold, being too political got him killed.

My 2¢'s about the UN?

Neal Boortz has the right idea- kick them off US soil, plop them down in Haiti, and tell them, "when you get this straightened out, give us a call..."

Moreover:

--Sex abuse charges rock UN in Congo-
-- Interesting this is being posted today. Talk show host Dennis Prager had the Israeli Ambassador to the UN, Doree Gold, on his show today. Mr. Gold has just written a book about the UN called the Tower of Babble(i think this was the title). Some of the things he was saying about the UN were unbelievable.

--TV campaign urging: Kick U.N. out of U.S.-
"I say we just give the entire country of Haiti to the UN."--or move them to Zimbabwe or another country in Africa. Let them see what the really do for the world.

--UN knew of Saddam's oil-for-food thefts: BBC-
The sooner we resign from this corrupt organization and kick them off our soil, the better.

The people at the Times are clueless. No wonder that their stock has dropped due to reduced readership, and reduced advertisers. Oh well...

"United Nations officials fear that Secretary General Kofi Annan may have lost the confidence of the organization's most powerful constituent, the United States."

Since when do they care in the slightest? Hell, being disliked by America alone would make him a shoe-in.

The UN is beyond repair.

Yes, but you see now he needs us.

The dog just realized he bit the hand that feeds him and now GW's coming after him with a rolled up newspaper!

Now Kofi wants President Bush's support so he can keep his job?

The liberal media will not acknowledge that Koffi has to go because of his participation in corruption at the U.N., which included opposing the Iraq war, which Koffi opposed to protect the oil-for-food scam and his part in it.

Koffi of course is asking for the administration's help to keep his job, help he knows he won't get, but he hopes Bush's refusal will further inflame anti-Americanism. What is so disgusting is that the U.N. and the E.U. both were perfectly happy for Saddam to continue his murderous oppression of the Iraqis. It's all just sickening to think our hard-earned money is sent to the U.N. and so furthers the misery of innocents around the world.

"officials fear"
What is the big deal? He's been there long enough. Time for a new Secretary General.

"Officials fear" because when Kofi loses his job and control of the information regarding oil-for-food a lot of "officials" and other high muckity-muck types are going to lose their jobs as well.

By excerpting (no need to excerpt NYT, BTW), you omitted this paragraph:

But Senator Carl Levin, the ranking Democrat on Mr. Coleman's panel, argues that it is "unwarranted and unfair" to blame Mr. Annan for the scandal when Washington "winked" at the source of most of Mr. Hussein's illicit revenues: letting Jordan and Turkey undermine sanctions by importing Iraqi oil. "Let's look in the mirror," he said.

I am wondering who was President when this winking was going on, what party that person was in, and whether Sen. Levin is in the same or a different party. When Sen. Levin "looks in the mirror," who does he see? Not, I think, President Bush.

I absolutely love President Bush but this is going to be the "test" for me. If he caves and supports Annan, that would be more than I could take. It would prove that even with Bush it is all "Politics". I pray he, at the least, stays neutral.

Excellent points about Levin. The "wink and a nod" policy was applied to a great many incidents in the Clinton White House. Just because Bill Clinton did it, it doesn't make it a standard we should govern by now.

As for excerpting, I confess, I did it out of fear. I'm a newbie and 1. Don't want to get Mr. Robinson in any trouble and 2. Continually hear the mantra regarding bandwidth in my head.

This was my second post and I'm simply satisfied not to have made a fool of myself and not to have been flamed yet.

I promise to find and review the guidelines for posting articles and excerpts.

I care who is the Secretary General as much as I care who is the president of Chad. Both are irrelevant.
