WASHINGTON — Congress is likely to move to reduce U.S. funding of the United Nations if leaders at Turtle Bay don't come clean and institute major reforms in the wake of the Iraq oil-for-food scandal, The Post has learned.

Recent interviews with Congress members and staff investigators revealed growing shock and outrage at the scope of history's biggest financial scandal, in which Saddam Hussein is alleged to have ripped off $21.3 billion from a humanitarian program intended to provide food and medicine to the Iraqi people.

The officials said there is increasing sentiment to take drastic action, including cutting U.S funding if the United Nations doesn't make radical changes in its secretive policies and questionable management procedures.

The $1.12 billion annual U.S. contribution to the United Nations represents 22 percent of the world body's budget.

Gosh, I don't think this idea will pass the "global test".

But it darned well might pass the "Smell Test"

Some of the old time crumudgeons used to speak of the UN as a Trojan Horse. Time is proving them right.

This is not the way to respond to this predicament. Kofi & Son, France, Germany and Russia all played cute with Iraq in defiance of numerous UN resolutions and program regulations. We can do a lot better with this scandal than withold their allowance!

Haven't the US been preaching about UN corruption reform over 20 years?

Seems a far too reasonable and modest proposal.

We are probably at the worst of it; funding terrorism by way of U.N. donations just to keep the corrupt 'friends of the U.N.' alive, while they serve their own corrupt interests.

Better for us to STOP the funding; pull the real estate in NYC. . .give these people thirty days to evacuate the premises and and the US as well.

Doubt that this corruption is such a surprise. . .but the Iraq invasion brings the 'discovery phase' of this debacle to the attetetion of the world-at-large.

Sorry, the first part of my post was cut off. I said that that if I were W, I'd issue an Executive Order to have that building evacuated, and on day 61, have the Army Corps of Engineers further evacuate the building before imploding it.

The UN owns the buildings and the land upon which they stand.

Let them stay there.

Just terminate, electricity, natural gas, water, telephone and cable TV service to all UN facilities.

They still have stairs if they want to use the high rise buildings without elevators and without the lights and air conditioning energized by electricity.

They can always carry buckets of water from the river up the stairs. They can knock out windows for fresh air.

One positive result will be for the overpaid crooks at the UN to be forced to live the squalor of the people in their native countries. It will keep them "in touch" with the lifestyles of their people "back home."

The UN owns the buildings and the land upon which they stand. No, it is not "owned by the UN." The land is owned by the Rockefellers. The United States of America built that building. We pay 22% of the cost of maintaining that building. The dignitaries park illegally, do not obey the law and strut past police. These bastards should be shuffled onto busses and shipped out of town.

Wake up, fella.

You forgot to mention it's also a hotbed for spies against us. Why do you think no other nation wants to host it?
