I thought that was one of sKerry's most stupid, if not the most stupid statements of his campaign. Like it or not the MAD doctrine has worked so far. I saw it as an invite to China specifically.

I would say rather that U.S. Strategic Deterrence has worked, i.e., no nuclear war against our mainland...yet. As a practical theory for real security, MAD hasn't worked, all that well. We have had a lot of real hot wars, not cold, all around the peripheries.

And one of the keys to maintaining strategic deterrence was the practical adoption of counterforce deployments during Reagan's terms, so as to credibly have escalatory advantage-denial, and also Reagan's SDI program. It has always kept an potential agressor guessing as to what we really had.

To me, it was even more stupid when Kerry also repeated in the debates, his plan to dismantle and prohibit U.S. Missile Defense. This while just the week before, North Korea had again rattled the cage of the IAEA....
