And Putin stuck his neck way out for Bush saying that he had told Bush that Saddam had WMD and planned to use them against us.

If the Ukraine military supports the Russian-backed party then there is little to nothing we can do, realistically, except call attention to it. Pointless really.

If they support the opposition then we need to let them know the US will try to help them somehow, even if not directly.

I spent a couple months in Kyiv - and although I'm not an expert - I can guarantee that the average Freeper would be well over on the side of the opposition.

The Ukraine has been subjugated by the Russians for a good deal of recent history - including losing 8 million people in WWII - more than any other country - mostly because Stalin was busy starving them during that period.

I found the Ukrainians in Kyiv to be highly intelligent - and very much wishing to be more western - since they were free of the Soviet empire and could set their own path. Kuchma represented the new Russian buttheads - previously communist bosses who got paid extraordinary amounts of money and ownership of state enterprises to become Robber Barons that make our historical ones look like nickel snatchers at a lemonade stand. Everybody resented these New Russians , as they were called, Mafiosi by any other name - and I had the good fortune to be playing at a expat coffee house where the opposition surreptitiously met to discuss their ideas for a democratic future. From our discussions, I firmly believe these people deserve a free election, and democracy if that is the result of the former.

As far as Soros is concerned - well he may wear two-legged pants - but I'm not about to wear 3-legged pants just because of that.

What we should DO, about all this? I believe we should pull the financial rug out from Russia - and unfortunately from the Ukraine too, if they're going to be a puppet. But shooting wars? - no way in hell can we risk that.

Remember, Putin was the former head of the KGB...you didn't get that posting in the old USSR if you were not a HARDCORE, ardent communist!

As some of you know, I am a U.S. Army officer. Anyway, many years ago when I was just a "baby" 2LT, the Commanding General of the armor division I was assigned to, gave each new tank platoon leader a print out of a speech given by a Lecturer at the Lenin Schoold of Political Warfare in 1981, and we had to carry it around at all times...I still have it, and it is displayed on my home office bulletin board! It says:

"Today of course, we are not strong enough to attack. To win, we shall need the element of surprise. The bourgeoise will have to be put to sleep. So, we shall begin by launching the most spectacular peace movement on record. There will be electrifying overtures and unheard of concussions. The capitalist countries, stupid and decadent will rejoice to cooperate in their own destruction. They will jump at another chance to be friends. As soon as their guard is down, WE SHALL SMASH THEM WITH OUR CLENCHED FISTS!"--Dimitry Z. Manuilsky--Lecture at the Lenin School of Political Warfare--March 1981

Prophetic?

The Commies tried to kill Yuschenko. They did manage to make his face get all covered with boils and pockmarked. Then Putin came to the country and told the electorate to vote for the most handsome candidate. (He used a word which can mean nice or nice-looking.)

Before                      After Poisoning Attempt by Putin's Buddies

They have tried, but failed to kill him. They have poisoned him and permanently disfigured his face. Now they are trying to blatantly steal the election he won.

Commie bandits know that he'll lock them up if he gets into power.

"This is one time I think we should stay out of it."Stay out of it as we did in in Budapest, and Prague, and Warsaw???

Stalin is back in Moscow. Mao is back in Beijing. The Ayatollah is back in Tehran. Gutless wonders run the UN. Chirac-in-the-sack is in Muslim Paris. SchrODOR is in Muslim Germany. Gutless leftists run Spain. Norway and Sweden are undergoing an Islamic swarm. And the Dutch are just waking up.....and you say THIS ONE TIME WE SHOULD STAY OUT OF IT? We have been sitting with our thumbs in our "democrat" doing nothing while the world sets up for a World War baby!

President Bush, State Dept and CIA better get on the stick! Outcome management is a priority right now.

Agree. FReepers, please do your homework before you voice an ignorant opinion. There is more going on than you seem to perceive or remember.

My thoughts exactly. If they want to elect Mickey Mouse, they are entitled to do it. The ship will right itself, but not with Putin trying to strong arm things from next door. Democracy means the people are entitled to subject themselves to whatever terrible leader they choose (Clinton for example)
Re Putin though it didnt take a rocket scientist to see that "Once a KGB agent, always a KGB agent."
The issue is whether the people got who they elected. And Putin's response to international pressure will show us whether the cold war is back on.

Putin only helped out in Afghanistan because getting rid of the Taliban improved Russia's security. The Russians would probably have had to go to war with the Afghans within a few years if the US and allies hadn't taken out the Taliban. Putin will only help the USA out when it directly benefits Russian interests.

The Russians don't have any business putting down the Ukrainian opposition protests by force. If it comes to that, then we should slam the door on them hard.

Speak for yourself. Luschenko is supported by Soros, the COmmunist Party and the Socialists, and has a history of anti-semitism. This is not a good choice for Ukraine.

My husband is Ukrainian and so are his closest friends. My mother-in-law still speaks it fluently.
