I had the exact same reaction to the original "Alien" movie, in the theaters. I went in with a few friends to see a midnight showing of the movie, and on a really big screen, that was the most stress filled movie I had ever seen! In fact, in the scene where the cat jumps out of the storage locker, I said "That's it!" got up, and walked out!
The "chest bursting" scene was one of the wildest I had ever seen up till that point! If you think that the people around that table were amazing actors during that scene, it's because only the crew and John Hurt knew what was going to be happening! The other actors thought that he was just going to be having a seizure.

Out the door I went when the family was on the boat. I just can't take that movie because of the tension.
Gore doesn't bother me. I was an embalmer as my summer job in college.
NO QUESTION: THE RING, I love disturbing visuals. That cause me a few days unrest and my girlfriend 4 days of nightmares. I can't even mention Samarra without her screaming to shut up......!!!!
Yeah but "Spaceballs" ruined that for me! "Hello, my baby! Hello, my honey! Hello, my Ragtime gal!" :-)
I thought Aliens was a lot better - maybe more of an action flick than horror. I saw the Exorcist when I was 13-14 years old and it did nothing. Same for The Shining w/Nicholson. If both were made like the books were, they would have been better.
The first Halloween movie was very scary. I do not think there is hardly any blood - if at all. The scene where Jamie Lee has stabbed Michael in the eye and he is dead on the ground. She is comforting the children and behind her you see him get up. That was scary to me!
This was not a movie but who remembers Night Stalker, the made for tv movie. That was suspenseful and scary.
I don't think that were expecting anything other than a dinner scene going into that take. Watch Veronica Cartwright during the scene. She looks off camera at the crew for help while Hurt is choking and flopping around.
