Troops get tip-off on Zarqawi

Kirkuk - Security forces were on Tuesday focussing their hunt for Iraq's most wanted man, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, on an area in north-central Iraq after receiving a tip-off, an Iraqi national guard officer said.

"We received concrete information from very reliable sources that Zarqawi was transferred today (Tuesday) to Tuz Khormatu and is heading to Baquba," staff brigadier general Anwar Hamad Ameed, the national guard chief in the northern city of Kirkuk, told AFP.

He gave no further details.

Tuz Khormatu lies about 180km north of Baghdad.

The US military believes Zarqawi, who has a $25m bounty on his head, had been using the rebel stronghold of Fallujah, west of the capital, as a safe haven but that he escaped the city before a US-led assault this month.

In October his group pledged allegiance to Osama bin Laden's al-Qaeda network and changed its name from Al-Tawhid wal Jihad (Unity and Holy War) to The al-Qaeda Group of Jihad in the Country of Two Rivers (Iraq).

Zarqawi's group has claimed responsibility for many of the most ferocious attacks in Iraq, including car bombings, kidnappings and beheadings.

I think the Iraqis are coming to the realization that if they don't start standing up to these terrorist our troops will come to their town to find / fight them and flatten their town like we did in Fallujah.
Getting closer PING...

If the coalition is getting tipped off, why are we letting him know? I don't understand that.

Keeps him on the move. When you're looking for a guy like Zarqawi, it's easier to find him if he's moving.

Frankly, I hope he doesn't survive the firefight.

I do too, we see what happened when we captured Saddam Hussein alive last December. He is still alive.

Rember folks by the time we get the information, it is several hours to days maybe weeks old. If we do find the hole that piece of human filth is in, we should deploy MOAB!

Why so much info made public? Unless it is an attempt to flush him out from his hiding place.

Don't take him hinto custody. It's better if he dies during arrest. Keep some liberal lawyer from getting him released.

"Why would they release this info to the press?"

Misinformation maybe? Remember how Stormin Norman conned the press in the Gulf War.. After it was all over and the MSM learned how they'd been used, they were outraged!!! Gen Schwartzkopf just smiled and said " Saddam watches CNN too."

I agree. Keep him having to make snap decisions and move at the drop of a hat. Could send him right into the loving arms of the troops. They could all give him a big group hug, a real tight one.

I can't think our generals are that stupid. It may be that they say one thing to make him think he got away and doing another, e.g. sending our troops east while saying they are going north. I also can't imagine this is the only place they are hunting this scum. Any which way, dead or alive, he needs to go now.

The regime of the Ba'athists has never surrendered, not even Saddam himself, who still considers himself to be President of Iraq, just going through a rough patch at the moment.

Ha! I like that. Saddam had a temporary setback.
