CHILEAN WHINES (Agent Trotta, Pres. Bush, and What Really Happened - WSJ)
The Wall Street Journal Best of the Web Today ^ | November 22, 2004 | James Taranto

Posted on 11/22/2004 1:30:55 PM PST by GretchenM

The [APEC] summit in ... Chile, was the site of a ... kerfuffle... over the weekend, as the Chileans picked fights with the U.S. Secret Service and lost. The first ... involved Nick Trotta ... in President Bush's security detail. As the president ... entered ..., "Chilean officers, who appeared to be waiting for the moment, stepped in front of Trotta, blocking him from entering," ...

U.S. officials said Chilean police had been chafing for a week about a demand by Secret Service agents that they control the president's space...

... amid a flurry of half nelsons, one Secret Service agent wound up jammed against a wall. "You're not stopping me! ...I'm with the president!" an unidentified agent can be heard yelling on videotape...

... The president, who is rarely alone ...turned and walked back to the front door unaccompanied, facing the backs of a sea of dark suits. Bush, with his right hand, reached over the suits and pointed insistently at Trotta. At first the officials ... did not realize it was the president intervening. Bush then braced himself against someone and lunged to retrieve the agent, who was still arguing with the Chileans. The shocked Chilean officials then released Trotta.

Trotta walked in behind Bush, who looked enormously pleased with himself. He was wearing the expression that some critics call a smirk, and his eyebrows shot up as if to wink at bystanders.

The Post quotes Marcelo Romero, a Chilean reporter: "All of us journalists agree that President Bush looked like a cowboy. It was total breach of protocol. I've seen a lot of John Wayne movies, and President Bush was definitely acting like a cowboy." Apparently some journalists think that's a bad thing.

In the 1980s I had the opportunity to spend a couple of months in Chile. I recall being invited to one of our Chilean friends home for dinner one night so that his young son could see the "Texan with the cowboy boots." Things seem to have changed significantly down there, but then if there are any "Blue States" in Chile, Santiago would be one. Chile was definately a beautiful country.

Well, you journalist weenies have been calling him a cowboy for years....and now you find out what has always been true of cowboys...they don't take a lot of guff before taking action!!

Seems you journalist weenies were right on one point - Bush is a cowboy! What you don't realize is that the majority of Americans like it that way!

Americans had a choice between a guy that winsurfs in flowered shorts or a guy that clears brush from his Texas ranchland. We picked the cowboy.

I love it that Mr. Romero knows how to spell "breach." But I love it more that President Bush was acting like a cowboy.

Everybody knows cowboys make the best presidents.

Not knowing what really happened any better than anyone else, I will say if these were Chilean Army "officers," it's all a bit of a shame, because these guys take their traditions from the Prussian Army and the pre-Nazi Wehrmacht, and are very proud and competent. The armed forces have for most of Chile's history - with some recent exceptions - been the only part of the country that actually knew what it was doing. I suspect this could have been avoided with better communication, and that the Chilean officers acted the way they did because they thought additional security for GW was superfluous and an insult to their abilities.

Well, if your guys were intentionally causing trouble, then this wouldn't have happened.

As far as I'm concerned...

BREACH THIS PROTOCOL!

Next time Bush goes to one of these summits he should be carrying a sidearm openly. They already accuse him of being a "cowboy"! Don't disappoint your audience, I always say.

Have you ever read the fine work of art called "Holidays in Hell" by PJ O'Rourke?

First, it's one of my FAVORITES books. He has a chapter entitled "Among the Euro-Weenies" which is hilarious!

At the end of this chapter... he writes...about Americans...

We're the baddest-a**ed sons of bitches that ever jogged in Reeboks. We're three quarters grizzly bear and two=third car wreck and descended from a stock market crash on our mother's side. You take your Germany, France and Spain, roll them all together and it wouldn't give us enough room to park our cars. We're the big boys, Jack, the original, giant, economy-sized, new and improved butt kickers of all time. ....

We walk taller, talk louder, spit further, f*ck longer, and buy more things than you know the names of...

It's some of the finest words ever written/spoken... sigh...

Message to the world including Chile, we are the cowboys. Make no mistake. When you watch footage of US forces entering the European Continent on D-Day, you can rest assured that the message was "Hitler, we're coming to get you." When we declared war on oslima and islamic terrorists, the message is, "We're coming to get you." We, all of US are coming to get you. Chirac, krautville, North Korea, Iran--we're coming to get you, maybe not tomorrow or the next day, but make no mistake, we will be there. Pi$$ on your frigging protocol, this ain't the Clinkton or Kerry administration, the grown ups are in charge. Kinda like when Shane finally had enough and came to get the thugs. Cowboys, hell yes. There's a new sheriff in town and his name is W.

The incident was played scores of times on satellite channels viewed around the summit. Conversations about it quickly overwhelmed talk of formal summit business...

Christian Chandia from Radio Agricultura said: "Unfortunately all the news will be about the security incident and fighting terrorism, but nothing to do with what happened here at the APEC summit."

Here's that phone number you're looking for Christian...

I happen to like cowboys - and can remember how the west "once upon a time" was copied over and over by other nations -

When did the image change - when the Socialist decided to use the term - ? If so - we know which side these so called journalists are taking - if they use the term in an attempt to cast an insult -

just my thoughts -

They obviously don't understand the Cowboy Code. We don't consider "Cowboy" a derogatory term - we love our cowboys.
