CHILEAN WHINES (Agent Trotta, Pres. Bush, and What Really Happened - WSJ)
The Wall Street Journal Best of the Web Today ^ | November 22, 2004 | James Taranto

Posted on 11/22/2004 1:30:55 PM PST by GretchenM

The [APEC] summit in ... Chile, was the site of a ... kerfuffle... over the weekend, as the Chileans picked fights with the U.S. Secret Service and lost. The first ... involved Nick Trotta ... in President Bush's security detail. As the president ... entered ..., "Chilean officers, who appeared to be waiting for the moment, stepped in front of Trotta, blocking him from entering," ...

U.S. officials said Chilean police had been chafing for a week about a demand by Secret Service agents that they control the president's space...

... amid a flurry of half nelsons, one Secret Service agent wound up jammed against a wall. "You're not stopping me! ...I'm with the president!" an unidentified agent can be heard yelling on videotape...

... The president, who is rarely alone ...turned and walked back to the front door unaccompanied, facing the backs of a sea of dark suits. Bush, with his right hand, reached over the suits and pointed insistently at Trotta. At first the officials ... did not realize it was the president intervening. Bush then braced himself against someone and lunged to retrieve the agent, who was still arguing with the Chileans. The shocked Chilean officials then released Trotta.

Trotta walked in behind Bush, who looked enormously pleased with himself. He was wearing the expression that some critics call a smirk, and his eyebrows shot up as if to wink at bystanders.

The Post quotes Marcelo Romero, a Chilean reporter: "All of us journalists agree that President Bush looked like a cowboy. It was total breach of protocol. I've seen a lot of John Wayne movies, and President Bush was definitely acting like a cowboy." Apparently some journalists think that's a bad thing.

this reminds me of a few weeks ago when Farve blocked for Green and came up with a huge grin on his face! great leaders are never afraid to get in the fray.

Has anyone noticed that there are more cowboy movies than reporter movies? There's a reason for that.

Hey Chilean journalists... In America we kick butt first and take names later. The POTUS made his own protocol out of the chaos, and that's called leadership (or taking the bull by the horns in cowboy land). GWB rocks!!!!!

Make sure you put it on "full screen" ... you see the scuffle a lot better. Then, just hit the space bar or escape to get out of it.

Mr. Romero ought to see a surgeon about the removal of his intestinal blockage.

Sounds like a case of cranial rectal inversion to me. That does create a really bad blockage of course.

An English friend of mine said something a few years ago that I adopted. "If the US goes, there no place else to run to."

Another European friend decided he had to come here but suddenly and mysteriously changed his mind. After that he became scarce and drifted away. I always suspected he was turned down (this was many years ago). But it showed how much it meant to him.

If you live in hell, you don't have to leave it as long you know there's a parachute, someplace better to escape to. Most people are jealous of US but knowing we're here makes life more livable. Helps me feel proud and lucky, but I still feel sorry for those whose envy turns to hate.

That's why I like what Bush is doing, aggressively going after terrorism. Yes, it's because they attacked us, but an added plus for US is it will benefit other countries, and that ought to piss them off all over again. LOL!

No one is going to say if Trotta was carrying the football or not, I see...

Unless the football had been considerably minaturized, I don't think he was, since he wasn't visibly carrying anything.

Typicaly Russian. Putin appears to have his ponco on backwards. That's probably what W is laughing about.

Putin: Ok, so why did they starch mine and not yours?
W: 'cause I'm a Cowboy and they knew better.

Thanks for this post, Gretchen. I read the entire article on WaPo. Even though the security breech is extremely serious, the WaPo story is hilarious. Even the White House press corps got into scuffles with foreign journalists. One big American cameraman was knocked off his ladder by an Asian reporter. So he had the Asian "wedged in his bicep" while he continued to film the President, LOL!

I recommend that everyone read the entire article. (If you don't want to register at WaPo, use www.bugmenot.com to get a temp user ID and password.)
