Exactly my point, was the reporter sure she was looking @ naval ordinance, or was it an uninformed guess?

btw: was it's rate of fire close to that of a tommy gun?

CV-18, I bet.

CV-7 was sunk in mid-September, 1942. CV-18 replaced her, and then became CVS-18.

Yeah, but I don't recall the Essexes having open 5"/25 mounts.

Bainbridge, Truxtun, California, South Carolina, Virginia, Texas, Mississippi, and Arkansas also were CGNs.

They were designed as DLGNs, and were built a destroyer standard for hull fittings and auxiliaries--the Long Beach was the only nuclear ship designed to a cruiser standard.

...and a factory for making car bombs that had a Ford Explorer inside with Texas license plates.

How did Molly Ivans get her SUV over there?

What in the world would explain that???

Everyone seems to think the Explorer was coming from Texas. Maybe Texas was the intended destination of the completed car bomb.

Yeah. I know. My mistake. I've already had two other replies correcting my mistake. That's what I love about FR. Got to get those facts right. Iowa and SD and North Carolina classes all had 16 inchers.

I wonder what the calibre actually is. Perhaps 203-210mm?
