Hillary Clinton's Image Softens, Moves To Center

WASHINGTON - Recent polls show the public's image of Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, D-N.Y., gradually morphing from sharply controversial First Lady to centrist constituent-minded senator. Although still a polarizing figure, the first-term lawmaker could use the makeover to position herself for a White House run in 2008.

Political strategists say Clinton has impressed Senate colleagues and constituents by working methodically on New York issues while taking moderate or conservative stances on controversies such as the war in Iraq.

"A majority feel positive toward her," said Lee Miringoff, director of the Marist Institute for Public Opinion in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. "She's being seen as being more effective and sticking to her job. She's managed to shape her role in a way that's more acceptable. She's in a transition."

You can either insult me or think about what I said. I am not a liberal (I hate them almost as much as I hate towel-heads), however, looking at what happened when she ran for senate (albeit it was in new york) the media never opposed her (just like kerry) but it will be politically correct to vote for her because she will be the first "woman" to run for president. If she ran now I don't think she could win, but she has been "moderating" herself since she got in the senate (go look at her votes if you don't believe me) my biggest concern with her doing that is basically what I mentioned before, Americans have a terribly short attention-span. In another 4 years of her moderating herself most Americans will have forgotten how terribly damaging her policies were and are to this day. I hope you're right about her losing, but I don't know. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

"What is significant about Hillary is not her speeches and interviews in this country, but her speeches and interviews especially in Europe."

You're absolutely right.

Wasn't there a Hillary interview with Der Speigel that I'm sure she wouldn't want average American voters to know about?

We've got to post the links/transcripts.

I believe she had a 47% approval rating in that same poll, but she can't take much solace in that. Those that rate her negatively are intense about that.

Hillary is the absolute, perfect personification of evil and the antithesis of everything that defines our country.

Those who wish her to be POTUS are mentally weak and easily lead.

If theyre idiotic enough to try another liberal northern senator, let 'em! If they want to win, the should choose a Southern Governor, if they have any left.

...so many people have posted that archives on Hillary need to be kept for this battle.

We're trying! The two flys in Hillarrhea's! ointment are her high unfavorables in polling, and the chance that Rudy will unseat her... on the other hand, a vast number would support her because "it's a woman's time," she's a Clinton, and we have lots of gullible voters with the attention span of a gnat. I can see it going either way.

More's the pity.

I agree ... we can't get complacent.

At the risk of alienating Freepers (and I am pro-life), what scares me is the prospect of suburban women voters voting for Hillary (or whatever Democrat they have in '08) b/c of the propaganda of pro-abortion groups regarding any of GW's Supreme Court nominees (we all know such propaganda is coming).

There are a lot of voters who, though they don't like abortion and agree with limits on it, don't want it to be completely illegal (because they don't want deaths resulting from botched abortions).

Many of these voters don't even understand that if the Supreme Court invalidates Roe v. Wade, that we wouldn't immediately return to the days of coat hanger abortions--they don't understand that it would then be up to the state they live in, that their state could continue to make abortion legal.

Those are just my thoughts. I may be wrong. But I have talked to people (outside of FR) and I do get that impression.

So, you think Hilary will appeal to people worried about the war? Unless Islam surrenders, I think she would be at a distinct disadavantage.

No they won't. The problem with Democrats is that he sincere ones (see Zell Miller) are ostrasized, and the phony one (see Hillary) are embraced. Because she's a woman is the #1 reason why she won't win. She willnot carry the male vote, period! Only the Oprah crowd and Alan Alda wimps will vote for her. She'll be crushed worse than Mondale!

OK, her sexuality is irrelevant, but I'll dish anyway. Do you really think she is a lesbian?

I don't know where you got that idea, if you're going to put words in my mouth you might as well dress me up and call me santa claus as well. Hillary is an idiot, if you thought that somewhere in my writing I was saying differently, you yourself are an idiot.

I noticed last night when the media covered her. . .and her husband; arriving for the opening of his 'President's library' that a new Hillary was making her debut.

The change was startling. . .she was wearing a pretty pink suit. . .(I thought, Laura's favorite color) albeit, a pants suit, of course. . .but in what looked to be a 'soft wool'; not some 'gaberdine' that she usually favors.

Her hair trimmed, shiny and neat. . .and a new smile and as they entered the Library; her hand was tucked inside her husbands. . .her head slightly turned down so as to raise her eyes somewhat 'demurely'. . .as they walked in.

I wondered how many times did she watch a video of Laura and GW. . .to get all this down and together.

Here she comes. . .l

Actually, Hitlary has two BIG problems. First of all, no male over 30 will vote for the pig. Second many women won't vote for her cause she let her pig husband get away with his philandering for political expediency.

I called this one months ago: The whole point of the past "election" was to shift the Democrat party sharply to the left, and push it as far left as possible (hence the nomination of the most liberal Senator from the most liberal state for President). This will allow Hillary to paint herself as a centrist and swoop down on her broom in time for '08.

Oh how I hope Rudy unseats her! :)

"we have lots of gullible voters with the attention span of a gnat. I can see it going either way."

Me too, sadly. And it may all depend on the WOT--if we are as successful as we have been, then people will get complacent (please see my previous post--I worry about the "outlawing Roe v. Wade" propaganda).

You know what's sad about the whole thing? That the success of a Republican president could mean the downfall of the next Republican candidate.

For the next four years, GW is going to do everything he can to make America and the world safer. And I know, thanks to our troops, that it will be.

But if, by 2008, there are no further attacks on American soil, if Iraq begins to stabilize ... people will be more ready to consider a Democrat. Especially if they have spent the past four years listening to MSM propaganda.

I guess what it boils down to is: what's good for the Democrats isn't good for American security.

Anyway, thanks again for your hard work!

You know, I'm not sure. There have been many reports of her sexual adventures, but I have no way of judging how reliable those are. Somewhat telling in that regard, though, is the fact that her husband clearly was playing the field, and she had no complaint with that until it had political repercussions.

It's overstepping for me to categorically deem her a lesbian. That's either up to her or to John Kerry to announce.
