Virginia's Mark Warner for President in 2008?

UNDATED (AP) - Some Democrats think their best choice to return to the White House doesn't live too far away from it.

The Washington Post reports, a growing underground and Internet movement is promoting Virginia Governor Mark Warner as a candidate for president in 2008. His name has been tossed around by major media outlets in their coverage of the just-completed election and the question of where the Democrats go from here.

Observers say Warner has succeeded in the South by supporting fiscal conservativism, gun rights, and some limits on abortion. At the same time, he convinced the state's Republican legislature to pass a one-point-five (b) billion dollar tax increase.

Warner's term expires in 2005. He says his sole responsibility right now is to Virginians.

My impression is that he campaigned as a "Conservative" democRAT. When he got elected, he started whining that we needed "tax reform" in the Old Dominion. Well don'tcha know it, but "reform" really means "increase". So with the regretable help of some RINO members of the legislature, he got his "reform". Now the only problem is how long will it take him to spend the BILLION dollar surplus that "reform" netted the state. Ya see, we didn't need reform after all, but I haven't heard any talk from Warner about repeal.

Funny how it works. When Republicans try to pass themselves off as "moderates", and they get elected, they mostly vote a liberal line, but when democrates run as conservatives and get elected, they instantly become liberals. When will we EVER learn. Doesn't matter what the snake says, he will always, always bite you, given half a chance.

He can only run for one term in VA.

Dork Warner can't run for President after having been governor for four years. Warner will probably run against George Allen in 2006. I think Allen would clean Dork Warner's clock. To give you an example of what a lightweight Warner is, he wasted much of first year in office pushing for a change in the state's seatbelt law. If Warner wants to hang his hat on that, he can be my guest.

Jimmy Carter was a one-termer.

Wasn't Jimmy Carter governor while he was running for President?

If Nixon had'nt resigned, we'd never have heard of Jimmy Carter.

Warner has been far superior on gun rights then his predessor Jim Gilmore.

OTOH He did push thru a tax increase. He doubled the tax stamp fees for getting a mortage (as of July) -a middle tax tax hike - refinace to save a few bucks a payemnt and the government gets a nice big fee for stamping the papers!!

Hillary will not allow him to recieve the nomination. She may let an adversary put on a good show, but thats about it.

I've lived in VA most of my life and as far as other places I've visited, the taxes are rather low. Gilmore became obsessed with ending the car tax, which was actually a very fair tax as far as taxes go (nobody forces anyone to drive expensive cars). I'm no fan of Warner, but it could have been a lot worse.

He's one of the few Democrats who would only draw nominal opposition from conservatives such as myself, due to his strong support for gun owners. I would probably vote for a Republican over him, but it would have to be a really good Republican.

yep, you can only be Gov one term in VA ... good or bad, you are limited to one term.

One of the first things Warner did when he took office was raise taxes. He is showing a huge surplus for VA with his tax increases, which tells me something. If we have such a big surplus, it seems we are being taxed way too much, or the money is not being spent where it needs to be. Schools roads, law enforcement, etc.

He also keeps himself primarily with his constituants in Northern VA. Rarely does he ever visit south side or SW VA. I think that he has forgotten rural VA.

If George Allen were to run against Warner, it would be an Allen landslide.(at least in VA) Allen was one of the most popular governors in VA, and has remained a very popular Senator.

Sorry, I hit enter and it sent my post before my post was complete.

His website lists him as a democRAT but it says nothing about him being from Connecticut. It says he was born in Indiana.

especially after the state showed a surplus 3 weeks after those RINOS passed the tax hike based on Warner's evidence of budet shortfalls.

Thanks for the info. There are certainly worse Dems out there than this guy, but it seems to me that unless he wins a Senate seat he will have no visibility and not be in a position to run for President in 2008. Besides, if Hillary wants the Dem nomination, I can't imagine anything standing in her way.

I lived in VA for four years back in the 1980's, and the car tax was the bane of my existence. I didn't have an expensive car at all, but the notion of paying a property tax on my car every year was anathema to me. I have NEVER voted for a Democrat, but I would have to look hard at someone who eliminated such an evil pestilence on the people of the Republic of Virginia.

Kerry hasn't been in the Senate for the last two years, and they nominated him. Oh, sorry, I see here that he was technically still a senator, despite the fact that he hadn't been showing up.

I'm thinking he moved here from Connecticut but I could be wrong, of course and he moved here directly from Indiana.

I don't want people to assume because Mark Warner is currently the governor of a southern state that he's a southerner.

Yes, he is an active Senator only under the narrowest interpretation. Guess there's no point in showing up at all now. He can focus full-time on windsurfing.

Warner for President? He's a political non-entity, one term and one term only as governor and no other experience. Made a fortune reselling cellular spectrum licenses. Worked for a tax increase and now lo and behold Virginia has a sizeable surplus. Will I get a refund????
