11/13/04 | mass55th

Posted on 11/13/2004 4:52:14 AM PST by mass55th

Within the next six or seven months, I'm hoping to move to Florida and set up residence. My youngest son, age 34 will be moving down there to set up residence as well. I'm asking for Freeper input and advice on where to move in Florida.

I'm a Civil War buff too. I have a Civil War map from 1863 hanging on my livingroom wall along with the book that came with it.

IMO, TN is the greatest. Someone mentioned hating Atlanta and I agree. Atlanta is awful so don't go there. LOL Memphis is our Atlanta so don't go there either. If you decide later to move to TN, stick to the East side close to the mountains. I'm about two hours from the Great Smokey Mountains and the Blue Ridge Mountains so my area is very hilly. I'm in Athens, between Chattanooga and Knoxville.

Thanks for the links. Someone else recommended Citrus County, and I have the site bookmarked.

Be ye forewarned. Try to get a place at least 20 feet above sea level, unless of course you want the ocean to consume your house during a hurricane. It almost doesn't matter what sort of construction that you get, if you're 300 yards and 2 vertical feet from the ocean, then you'll be losing big-time. You can get elevations from such sites as http://www.topozone.com

Florida, especially the Panhandle, does have inland flooding as well as coastal flooding. Flash flooding is common in the flatter peninsula. Unlike in the Northeast, rain frequently pours in Florida--3 inches or more from a thunderstorm, and more than an inch in an hour, is not uncommon.

My professional opinion is that FEMA does a particularly poor job of mapping flood hazards, typically underestimating floodplains.

Florida is also home to real alligators. Do not keep these animals as pets; they can kill you. South of Tampa, various exotic species live in a tropical climate.

I don't live in Florida, but have vacationed there. I like
it around Wakulla Springs, or at least liked the wild area
of Wakulla Springs resort, but that's not real life. My
husband and I never liked Florida a whole lot, but when we
visited the area between Daytona Beach and St. Augustine, he
said, "Now, I could live in this part of Florida, but I
guess the real estate would be high." So, I'm no help,
just being blabby.

Several other folks have recommended the Sarasota area. Looks like I'll be checking it out. Thanks for your help.

I can tell you places to avoid: Stay out of the paths of hurricanes.

Seiously -- look at the places that were hit by hurricanes in the past 20 years or so and cross of those areas.

Then evaluate the rest.

Thanks. I've got Jacksonville on my list. I'm a Civil War buff and the 55th Mass was camped in Jacksonville in February 1864 as a reserve unit for the Battle of Olustee. They were also at Palatka and Yellow Bluff, Florida.

Definitely the Panhandle. My brother lives in Destin and the beaches cannot be beat. Pensacola to Panama City is truly beautiful and it is the reddest part of a red state.

"Atlanta is awful so don't go there."

I've visited the Atlanta area a few times and agree. It's way to busy a city for my liking. I was born and raised in Rochester, New York so I've had my fill of big cities. They're okay to visit, but I don't want to live there.

Pinging a couple of folks that might help.

Keep in mind, though, that Florida is pro-euthanasia and is the proud frontrunner in the "right-to-die" movement (translation: they're working hard for the right to kill off the elderly, the unproductive and the inconvenient).

Thanks for the advice. We get our fair share of rain and thunderstorms in this neck of the woods. In fact, it rained most of the summer here. Our power went out for about 8 hours because the rain was so bad. If it isn't snowing here, it's usually raining. I want to move some place where the sun is out for more than two days in a row.
