They did not name it, Marshal Tito did.
They also make claims about history and culture which are spurious.
The name was always a cold war propaganda tool.
This would be no differnt than Atlanta GA suddenly claiming they were the original Athens of Socrates.
They are not claiming to be "new macedonia" (ala New York, or New England), the goal has always been to create the illusion of a division along the lines of North and South Korea or China and Taiwan.
The state department, with their USSR loving holdovers, "misunderestimated" this issues seriousness. They would have been much wiser to call a summit to get the parties to the table to talk. This move made a tense "issue" into a crisis.
(it is good the US MSM did not pick this story up. They would try and show it as Bush loosing control of the state department regardless of reality)
Great weekend fun..."What is the US doing to upset Destro today?"
No the issue is more complex than that. They are not claiming just "a name".
That has nothing to do with the United States.

They aren't concerning themselves with the issue, the are addressing both nations by the names they have given themselves.
Correct, the USA should have stayed out.
Consider the flag in the pictures above. The original flag that the former republic was using had the sixteen point star of Alexander the Great, this is a new flag.
Consider how every day the courts deal with name infringements. Consider the copied products which are using a established name to sell a fake. (ala fake Rolex, fake Calaway Golf Clubs) This is the same thing on a larger playing field.
the Parties had agreed to a stop gap measure of using the name FYROM. This is what is used by the UN and by the EU. You are correct in stating the USA should have left it alone.
They have stayed out of the dispute, they call Greece - Greece and Macadonia - Macedonia.
The State department seems to be working 24/7 against America's best interests around the globe. Thank God we have the Department of Defense and the CIA.
It is a dispute over a name...hardly the thing of great discussion.
The former republic agreed to the name FYROM, it was attempting to use the name Macedonia as part of a decption which is left over from the cold war.
As the title of the thread states, the US state department gives a commie victory. (espicially poinient when you remember that norther region bore much of the brunt of the Commie incursion/civil war after WWII)
By giving unilateral recognition they HAVE concerned themselves with the issue. They have gone outside the negotiations they originally set up and encouraged.
Next time the USA suggests negotiations, why bother just have a blood bath because the USA will nulify whatever the parties come up with.
You folks settle your own disputes and don't drag the United States into it. As long as they are a legitimate nation our State Department should call them by the name they elect, not by the name another nation wants us to us.
it is also a dispute over claims to land, history, historial objects. It has never been just a mere name issue. (at one point the greek negotiators said they would accept them using the words "new macedonia" if they would drop the historical and land demands)
Macedonia, the world, the newspapers and maps called Macedonia , Macedonia..get over it and move on.It is of no importance in a grand scheme of things..You still have Alexander and the ruins of greatness.
We recognized the name...period.
(s)fine I am going to register slight variation of the name CWOJackson and claim to be you. (/s)
not really but hopefully you get the point.
Its been fun. It really is pointless because this former republic wants to join the EU. It will not join the EU under any objectionable name because of the veto power each member nation has.
We will know better after the "semi-autonomy vote" in the former republic. If it just breaks up into more and different nations the whole issue may become moot.
The USA was not "dragged", the state department jumped in where they were never invited.
State may indeed have driven this move, but they act upon behest of the president, who must take ultimate responsibility. I found a thread on this subject in another message board with a more international group of posters. The Greeks are highly skeptical of the timing:

You can legally change your name to anything you want; that's your right.
not only change my name, but claim to be you.
LOL! When they call themselves Greece give me a call.
