These photos were taken at the post-election anti-Bush rally in San Francisco on November 3, 2004.
The rage and frustration of another Bush victory was more than many San Franciscans could take. As soon as Bush's re-election was confirmed in the middle of Wednesday, November 3, people started gathering at Powell and Market streets. By 5pm the crowd had swelled to several thousand.
The photographs below were taken at the rally and at the march that followed. Captions are provided only where needed.
Succinct.
Many protesters there simply could not accept what had happened. They paraded around with their election messages calling for Bush's defeat. I call them "November First people."
Still living in denial.
One group carried signs depicting famous revolutionaries and communists.
The most incomprehensible sign of the evening.
After night fell, around 6:30pm, the rally turned into a march to Mission and 24th streets. I heard murmurs that it might degenerate into a riot.
The Black Bloq folks hate San Francisco's touchy-feely leftists as much as they hate George Bush.
Luckily, the police came prepared, with officers lining the entire route, so the riot never materialized -- until the end, at the intersection of Mission and 24th, when the Black Bloq could no longer contain themselves. One of them threatened to attack a policeman, and was immediately arrested. The rest of the crew surrounded the cop in an angry mob.
Other cops swooped in and drove back the crowd. Here, the arresting officer drags the offender backwards toward the safety of the adjacent BART subway station.
As soon as the police descended the stairs into the station, the Black Bloq swarmed over the railing and rained firecrackers, rocks and traffic diverters down on the officers.
The BART staff panicked and decided to close down the station entirely. I ran to the other station entrance and saw that all the passengers were being quickly evacuated.
After a while the main entrance quieted down -- all that was visible were three traffic diverters that had been hurled at the cops.
Still frustrated, the Black Bloqers cried out, "Get the McDonald's!", but again the police were waiting for them. After seeing this row of cops protecting the building, the Black Bloqers backed off.
Their blood lust was satiated when someone started burning George Bush in effigy.
The crowd howled and screamed in excitement.
After the effigy was burnt to a crisp, the evening came to a shattering conclusion as the protesters ignited an upside-down American flag and cheered in ecstasy while the flames leaped into the night sky.
that's the anarchists' symbol
see #39
hehehehe, very good.
Anarchy!!
It's not the best form of Government...
Anarchists use that symbol. And here's more information about it than you probably wanted to know (from anarchism.net).
The A for Anarchy in a circle, usually in red and spray-painted on the background, is one of the most successful images among political symbols. It was created during the 20th century and is therefore a much more modern symbol than the classical black flag of anarchism. Its origin is not known, but there is evidence that the symbol was used by some anarchists during the Spanish Civil War and later by the Belgium organization AOA (Alliance Ouvriere Anarchiste).
The Circle A is said to represent Proudhons maxim that Anarchy is Order. (The A is for anarchy and the circle is either a symbol of order or represents the O.) But the Circle A is also said to be a symbol of unity and determination, forwarding the anarchist ideals and the inevitable rebellion against the rulers. Anarchists are devoted to the re-establishment of freedom for everyone and the importance of the cause cannot be affected by outer restraints. The circle is therefore, to some extent, a shield against the oppressive society surrounding the sovereign anarchist.
The Circle A also lends support to the idea of international anarchist solidarity, where the circle encompassing the A for anarchy could be interpreted as a representation of the world. Anarchists are committed to the abolishment of all rule, coercive hierarchy and oppression--no matter where it exists. The unavoidable anarchist rebellion takes no prisoners and thus no tyrant is safe when the rebellion has begun.
No matter the origin and the true meaning of the symbol, the Circle A is a very powerful symbol of anarchism world-wide. It is very often seen spray-painted on walls and under bridges or on the background of a black flag of anarchism.
Satan's monogram?
What is very disturbing is these days I'm having a hard time distinguishing between the liberal left and the extreme muslim terrorsts. These people are sick and disgusting. If these are the people who want to move to Canada, I say we start getting busses and have us freepers drive them out in their herds
An enemy is an enemy.
Bump for Caption-A-Ram use.
Is this true? I've read elsewhere that the crowd was never more than a couple of hundred.
Thanks for posting these. I look at photos of these nuts in anguish in the same way that a pervert must look at porn. So satisfying.
it's the symbol for anarchy
Geez! What else is new! You can't get through downtown San Francisco on any given weekend because of some unwashed group protesting some stupid thing or another! They are just too pathetic to take seriously!! We can only hope that one day they will actually GET serious and take their vile filth somewhere else, like Paris or Berlin! Although, they would probably be turned back at the border--those countries have enough nut-jobs of their own!
.....These people are prime examples of why I vote Republican.
The one goofball who had the "immigrants against democracy" sign should be deported for being stupid.
Anarchy
Now why did I know that I wasn't going to like the answer.
LOL
Thank you for giving me the answer.
I called the # on answercoaliton.org. I left a mess. and asked them to post "how the hell are we to get rid of the thugs' without going in.
Great pics. of true UNAMERICANS
I would publish that pic in the college newspaper if I knew it would not result in my immediate termination as editor...
But, I would be gone quicker than I would know what was happening. :)
Looks like a Satanist pentagram.
