Los Angeles, CA – Latino voters, staying true to form nationally in the presidential election, supported democratic presidential candidate John Kerry over President George W. Bush by a margin of 67.7% to 31.4%, an increase in support over the 2000 presidential election, according to a national exit survey conducted by the William C. Velasquez Institute (WCVI). For the 2000 presidential election, then Vice President Al Gore received between 62% and 68% support among Latinos, according to three different national exit surveys. Then-governor George W. Bush received between 29% and 37% Latino support from the same surveys.
“Nationally, Latinos continued their historic voting patterns, siding with the democratic challenger over the President by familiar margins, a little more than 2-to-1,” said Antonio Gonzalez, president of the William C. Velasquez Institute (WCVI). “President Bush tried unsuccessfully to increase his support among Latinos. The democrats’ message appears to have resonated with Latinos.”
Looking at a select number of Congressional races around the country, the WCVI exit survey found that Latinos preferred democratic candidates over their republican counterparts by a margin of 67.5% to 30.3%, a significant sign of support for democratic Congressional candidates. The WCVI exit survey interviewed 1,021 respondents in 56 precincts across 14 states.
In determining the results for the presidential race, the WCVI exit survey interviewed 1,179 respondents in 56 precincts across 14 states on Election Day. The states where the exit surveys were conducted include Florida, Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Nevada, California, Texas, New York, New Jersey, Illinois, Massachusetts, and Connecticut. These states represent over 90 percent of the national Latino vote.

The William Vazquez institute. I'm not sure whether it's more reliable than the media exit polls, but it is different.

I would be interested to see how Bush did among Latino Women.
This is BS. Republicans garnered over 40% of hispanic votes (closer to 45%).
From a previous post, it appears that it is sort of a "Jesse Jackson race hustler" for hispanics. It looks like they have a vested interest in claiming that hispanics are not moving into the Republican corner.

We wonder what country of Latin America this Institute would have us emulate. It's clear that they believe that we need to be more like a banana republic. Such scholarship and integrity -- it's almost like Mexico itself.

That's us latinos....somehow dem's convinced many of latinos (not me certainly) that they need the government support to survive oppression from whites. Plus, culture is different: we tend to want everything for free, and we tend to be lazy. LATINOS wake up to this great country and make your contribution!!!!.

Lets see: 6 Red vs 8 Blue states.
And I seriously doubt they polled people in California outside of Los Angeles. The inland empire latinos are nowhere near as blue as their urban counterparts.
If a chimpanzee were to score 70 on an IQ test it would hardly qualify as mentally retarded. By the same token, 30 percent of the Hispanic vote, given the immigrant status of many Hispanics, isn't anything to sneeze at. Hispanics are coming into this country and moving into the mainstream. The trend politically will be increasingly toward the center and even the right as they assimilate. The 30 percent figure is absolutely nothing for Democrats to crow about. They should be very, very concerned.
I'm not saying this poll is right. I don't know to form an opinion. But I also think the other polls showing 45% Latino support for Bush are also highly suspect.
I'm just posting this for general interest.
Actually, it's more than Gore got, if the 67.4% figure is right. The media exit polls are showing a 55% figure, which is a lot worse than Gore. I don't know which one is right. I'm just posting this because a lot of people are aware of the media exit polls but not of this exit poll, which contradicts it.
Given that the media exit polls were way off on calling the election, we should not be treating them as gospel truth.
