So Much to Savor (Peggy Noonan happy Dance.)
Opinion Journal ^ | November 4, 2004 | Peggy Noonan

God bless our country.

Hello, old friends. Let us savor.

Let us get our heads around the size and scope of what happened Tuesday. George W. Bush, 43rd president of the United States, became the first incumbent president to increase his majority in both the Senate and the House and to increase his own vote (by over 3.5 million) since Franklin D. Roosevelt, political genius of the 20th century, in 1936. This is huge.

George W. Bush is the first president to win more than 50% of the popular vote since 1988. (Bill Clinton failed to twice; Mr. Bush failed to last time and fell short of a plurality by half a million.) The president received more than 59 million votes, breaking Ronald Reagan's old record of 54.5 million. Mr. Bush increased his personal percentages in almost every state in the union. He carried the Catholic vote and won 42% of the Hispanic vote and 24% of the Jewish vote (up from 19% in 2000.)

It will be hard for the mainstream media to continue, in the face of these facts, the mantra that we are a deeply and completely divided country. But they'll try!

It was the yeomen of King Harry taking down the French aristocracy with new technology and rough guts. God bless the pajama-clad yeomen of America. Some day, when America is hit again, and lines go down, and media are hard to get, these bloggers and site runners and independent Internetters of all sorts will find a way to file, and get their word out, and it will be part of the saving of our country.
Awesome.

And don't forget, Bush increased the Republican majority in both the Senate and the House while getting re-elected. Last guy to do that was McKinley.

A few thoughts that I'll post here, rather than start a vanity thread.

1.) Promote Clarence Thomas to Chief Justice. Let the Dems fillibuster a black man and re-dredge up the Anita Hill hogwash from 15 years ago. This will be a blast and make the Dems look like total idiots. Why not Scalia? There is no functional difference in judical decsion-making between the two, and making the Dems fillbustrer a black man with a highly distinguished record will be fun to watch, possibly costing them votes in 2006.

2.) Name Orrin Hatch to the Supreme Court. He will be easy to confirm through the Senate, and his vacated Senate seat has a 100% chance of being filled by a conservative Republican. Save Estrada for later, in case O'Connor or Ginsburg jack it up, or Stevens dies.

3.) Once the Supreme Court is in GOP hands, lets bring a case that will fully incorporate the Second Amedment. "Incorporation" is the process by which the Bill of Rights mantras are made applicable to the states. In other words, the "incorporation" of the Second Amendment would prohibit any STATE laws that intrude on the right to bear arms. It will spell the death knell for gun control at the state level. Thomas is very pro-2nd amendment, as is Scalia. This is completely "do-able."

4.) Make the tax cuts permanent, and continue to cut taxes whenever possible. Forget steel tariffs, and any other legislation aimed at winning PA or any NE state. Its a lost cause, and PA is too corrupt and has too many slimebags in Philly to win a national election for President.

5.) Persuade Ashcroft to stay. Why? Thew left hates him. That's good enough reason alone!

I decided to repost it for the benefit of the odd few among us who log off occasionally,or who do not posess the foresight to search for articles they do not know exist but might enjoy reading.

Peggy Noonan, once again demonstrating why the Reagan White House kept people like her and sent the hold over from the Nixon White House, buchanan, packing.

I see you picked up John Kerry's used copy of Henry the Fifth.

He no longer has the need for his "Band of Brothers", or the play he lifted the line from.

"Have seen Peggy on a few shows and I just love that woman."

She certainly does have a commanding aura about her, a woman like Peggy might have a chance to be elected President, I certainly think she could draw more votes than Hitlary. She has a marvelous voice and bearing which Hitlary totally lacks.

Excellent ideas I would just add replacing Powell with John McCain as Sec. of State so we can get him out of the Senate where he causes trouble.

Thanks for posting the link. I'm so glad Ms. Noonan is back!! She's my all-time favorite political writer and I must say I went through some anxiety/withdrawal when she left to work on the campaign. But how it was worth it!! Now we have the best of both worlds -- Pres. re-elected and Peggy's columns back at Opinion Journal. Savor it!
