I downloaded XPSP2 and had to disable SpySweeper

Spy Sweeper is more like a nanny than a maid; MS Windows is a nag; I bit the bullet.

My concern now is what happens when Norton decides it doesn't like living around here. The download and restart took almost 30 minutes for SP2 (with broadband) and Spy Sweeper was pissed on restart, but then it forgot who I was about ten minutes before I assigned it to the trashcan for a trial period and it is my computer after all, isn't it?

I suggest that you need to go to sleep and worry about it in the morning.

The only issue I had installing XP-SP2 was ZoneAlarm...had to uninstall and reinstall. Everything else was fine - even NortonAV.

Norton will decide to keep it's bedroom, but you will see some strange firewall pop-ups for a while...

if you can't get to some web sites, add the address to the trusted sites

In IE, go to Tools, Internet Options, Security, Trusted Sites, hit the box that says 'sites', add the address (If it is not an 'https', unclick the box on the bottom, add it, then click the box again)

Try the newer build for Ad-AwareSE (www.lavasoftusa.com) - it has been terrific in office environments, too.

yes, disable norton.

it will take a while to process, too.

the good news is that it fixes a lot of problems you might have been having without really knowing it.

Norton is scheduled for 2:00 A.M. (I'm never offline) and I can toggle the firewall off and on at any time; my wife plays computer games, me I read news, FR (sigh) and weather, I guess I'll leave it as is until tomorrow - thanks.

I am going to put your nic in my memory bank..I won't even download adaware because the instructions confuse me..

I am computer dunce and the only problem I have is on Norton I overmodified some ad tags and blocked opinion journal, newsmax and cnn..LOL!..and I still have ad annoyance..

I swear something came along and made the box of the ad appear even though it is blank...I can disable Norton and get on the sites I blocked...I haven't a clue if I have spyware..I am sure I do..but so far XP has worked fine for me and no viruses ever.
I always download every critical update, have no problems and almost decided to forget XP2

I went through lots of angst to install SP2, as I have a version of XP that is uh, kinda, uh, less than uh, sanctioned?

But everything works so far, thankfully.

I don't know who Spy Sweeper is but I love Zone Alarm Pro and I have no problems with it and XP no matter what I download.

I also have Eudora as my e mail client and with it you never get viruses like you get with MS e mail client.

I don't even have antivirus anymore, my antivirus was so old I just got rid of it. I go to www.antivirus.com (Trend Micro) every so often and check my computer for viruses at no charge. I probably need to get a new antivirus program soon, when I do I think I will buy Trend Micro's PC Cillin.

Only my view but I, after downloading SP2, chose not to use the MS Firewall in the set up procedure even with MS suggesting I do. It would definitely had conflicts with my other security programs including Zone Labs Zone Alarm and Lavasoft's Ad-aware SE.

I have had no problems with SP2 but have had plenty of friends that did. But of course I am not using MS's protection plug-ins.

I really enjoy the Zone Alarm as it informs me of Norton's AV updates before Norton even does.

I'm glad I don't know much about computers. Whatever this Windows program is that's on my computer has worked fine for five years.

I had to buy new when MS quit supporting my old Packard Bell with Windows 95; kissed MSN goodbye after almost 8 years, got broadband and never looked back until Windows update/upgrade/upyours caught up with me.

I use the free Spysweeper. I like it better than Spybot(which ain't chopped liver).

I run AVG at 4 every morning and run medium Windows protection and sometimes ZoneAlarm.

Panda for heavy lifting is good too.

I sweep daily....sometimes more than once. I'm really happy with it.
