Why liberals do not abandon the left?

Why liberals do not abandon the left?

These are some plausible reasons why liberals do not abandon their leftist ideology, an issue that always intrigues and puzzles conservatives:

Bubble life syndrome: Liberals generally live in their respective bubble and tend to circulate among their own ilk and people of similar ideology. That is why the majority of the university professors, actors and entertainers, national press and media, race and gender activists do not know how out of touch their opinions and ideologies are from ordinary folks. They socialize and congregate in liberal circles, finding ideas other than theirs out of the norm or “extreme“. For example liberals don’t understand why people outside their bubbles get outraged and think of them as silly when they harass the boy scouts, attack SUVs, want to dictate to people the kind of coffee to drink, sue schools to remove Christmas holidays from their calendars, insist people refer to dogs as companions and not pets, or tell us mountain is a politically incorrect word!

Lifetime commitment: Most liberals end up as dated activists who are far invested in their leftist ideology and therefore think it would be too late for them to change. Sincere liberals confidentially confess that they remain liberal because they have devoted too much of their lives to their ideology to depart from it late in life. That is precisely why Sir Winston Churchill’s famous quote: “ Any man under thirty who is not a liberal has no heart, and any man over thirty who is not a conservative has no brains” makes so much sense.

Peer Pressure: Liberals have successfully divided their constituents into special interest groups based on race, gender, social class and lifestyle behaviors. That is why the majority of African-Americans, gays and lesbians, educators, unions, Jews, trial lawyers, entertainers and people in the media vote solidly Liberal/ Democrat. People within such groups remain liberal because of the fear of becoming an outcast or being chastised by their peers. For example, diehard liberals believe that minorities have no business being conservative. That is why the left is not embracing many distinguished and accomplished African-Americans such as Colin Powell and Condoleezza Rice and instead treat them as sell-outs!

Bleeding-heart Syndrome: Liberals believe that because of their ideology, they are the only ones with exclusive contracts with compassion and sense of humanity. They feel good about themselves by their constant talk about the needs of their special interests groups. They think that without their self-absorbed liberal ideas they would appear heartless. But typically their seemingly compassionate programs involve spending other people’s hard-earned money. Interestingly enough, a recent study revealed that the least level of charitable contributions in the US came from the affluent sections of the Northeast; the bastion of liberalism!

Success guilt: Liberals who have succeeded financially, feel apologetic about their achievements. In a hypocritical way, they deny their accomplishments, otherwise they would have to endorse the free market system that they have chastised all their lives. Hollywood celebrities and entertainers, in particular, fall in this category. Since they have misguidedly labeled conservatism as the ideology for the rich all their lives, they would feel silly about leaving their beloved liberalism and evolve.

Misunderstanding Conservatism: Liberals tend to have a complete misunderstanding of conservatism. They cry that conservatives desire nothing more than polluting the environment, throwing the elderly out in the streets, and abolishing civil rights. For this reason, in every election season, liberal politicians craftily assault conservatives with issues like race, gender, environment, and social spending. That is precisely why Conservative must start to define and expose liberals and explain what their ideology really stands for.

Now you see why people should free themselves from liberalism? Otherwise they would lead a cynical, indigent and conflicted life in pursuit of the next social protest.

The author is essentially saying 'Why don't liberals move closer to the center, politically, so that they're perceived as reasonable, moderate Democrats vs. rabid Leftists.'

No kiddin'. My mother lived and died this way. She had to look in the mirror and see "wonderful, caring person", but her caring was always carefully rationed to fashionable causes which showed up on the press. Go figure.

I screwed that up. I meant to say the author is outlining WHY liberals are the way they are and WHY it's hard as hell for them to change (not that they would want to change, of course)

"mountain" jumped out at me too. Would like to know why it's politically incorrect. Not saying it isn't. Just looking for a reason to work it more frequently into my conversation with liberals and watch them wince.

Liberals have nowhere else to go because your typical liberal has nothing to add to the political discussion in the first place. Modern liberalism thinks that any problem can be solved by one big benevolent entity instead of individuals thinking for themselves, and if that's not anything more than a cop out, I don't know what is.

I did a google search and found nothing about "mountain" being non-PC. If anyone ever finds out what the author is talking about, please tell me.

Democrats assimilate their beliefs by instruction. A Greenie Naderite is more likely to become a strong conservative in 10 years than an assimilated Democrat because, although maybe thinking wrongly now, he has the potential to think for himself and evaluate his position...evolve.

For instance, a Democrat might believe that nuclear fuel is the worst poison on earth today but if he is instructed tomorrow that "we should give nuclear fuel to Iran for "peaceful purposes", the new thought will kick the old thought out and the new thought will settle in in its place. Someone who isn't an assimilated Democrat would have some dissonance to work through on that.

When a new viewpoint enters the Republican Party or anywhere else except the assimilated Democrat collective, there is an intellectual battle that takes place.

If a new issue crops up that is unrelated to anything assimilated, try asking an assimilated Democrat what his stance is on that issue and the Democrat will be lost without his instruction and will go through all kinds of mental turmoil trying to relate it to something that he has received instruction on.

This is why "party platform" has more meaning to Democrats than to the rest of us because they assimilate the platform while Republicans try to understand each other, sometimes bite the bullet and cut deals, and realize that we are all individuals with different outlooks.

Perhaps because it implies that the mountain never did come to Muhammed :)

"The Language Police" by Diane Ravitch talks about how grade school textbook publishers have "sensitivity panels" that do "bias reviews," removing references to things that might be offensive to any conceivable group. Stories set in hills and mountains have been omitted for being "regionally biased," and thus might harm the self-esteem of kids who live in the plains.

"This country has gone nuts, and I am heading for the hills!" I think you mean, "This diverse collection of multicutural entities is in need of therapeutic resources, and I am heading for the indigenous geological structures!" (Just tryin' to be politically correct, doncha know...)
