Bush backs temporary work ID for immigrants
OK for jobs unfilled by Americans, he tells Hispanic audience

WASHINGTON - President Bush, saying the United States should find a more humane way to treat immigrants, told a Spanish-language television network Thursday that he supports offering temporary cards to immigrants who want jobs that go unfilled by U.S. citizens.
Bush said the card would provide legal status for undocumented immigrants or those who want to come to the United States to work. But he said he would not offer amnesty.
"I recognize that people are coming here to work," Bush told Univision. "And while they're doing jobs that aren't filled by Americans, I think there should be a temporary worker program and a card that helps the workers and employers who want them."
The president had made immigration reform a priority, but put it on the back burner after the Sept. 11, 2001 terror attacks. He championed immigration reform again in a White House speech in January, but election politics have prevented any legislative action.

Remind me again after Bush wins re-election.
The cheap labor argument kind of falls apart --- for one it's not so cheap for the taxpayers who must support the children of a $4 an hour worker --- to the tune of $10,000 per year per child --- there are often 8 to 10 children --- then you have the free health care which must be given to them, and the government housing subsidies because the parent can't rent anything making just $4 an hour for seasonal work.
That sounds pretty racist --- look around here --- the border area --- it's not blacks filling the welfare offices here. It's Mexicans --- straight from Mexico --- which is why Clinton insisted welfare handout workers must speak Spanish to their "clients". Here the blacks are working, it's the Mexicans who lost their jobs because of NAFTA who could easily return home now who lay around collecting every kind of welfare program --- it's they who won't take the low-paying jobs that the illegals will.
Since you seem to be such a fan of Vicente Fox --- you might be interested in what happened to him yesterday --- he came up to Ciudad Juarez to pay a visit:
Angry teachers confront Fox
Visit to Juárez disrupted
Pushing and punches were exchanged as presidential security personnel tried to open a path for the motorcade being blocked by some of the 1,500 protesters angry over proposed changes to government pension system, police said.
"We demand that you listen to us! You are a liar and a traitor!" screamed one unidentified protester.
News video footage showed protesters kicking at vans in the motorcade and running after the vehicle carrying Fox. The motorcade route back to the airport was changed. No one was arrested, and no injuries were reported.

Kind of interesting --- you can't reform this Socialist/Communist hellhole --- the Mexican people don't want reforms at all --- they are very heavily unionized (70% compared with 10% in the USA), they very much love government programs. They won't even listen to the benefits of privatization --- yet some want to bring them all here thinking they'll vote for Republicans????
Amnesty by any other name is still AMNESTY! And it's wrong! Rewarding criminal behavior is especially wrong!
That list is growing almost daily now and it will soon be endle$$.
Hey, way not consider a long vacation in the DPRK AKA North Korea, I believe they have this policy toward protecting their southern frontier.
Microchip 'em. The Mexican Attorney General and his staff use this technology for identification purposes.
If it's good enough for them, it's good enough for the wetbacks.
Regarding your post #77. Don't be silly. Everyones "chicken" already costs $4.00 a pound. We pay for our "chicken" through higher taxes, to support illegals in schools, welfare, food stamps, housing, hospitalization.
Your arument isn't even CLOSE to being based on reality.
Nice try though....
You hit the nail on the head. That's exactly what is happening.
He bends my brain. If you find a link to that, send it my way if you have the time.
How does this article being posted contribute to denying Kerry the White House?
They earned that money. If we turned off the welfare for illegals, we'd get only those that pill their own weight. I'd happily give them work permits.
Would you put up with restrictions on transferring YOUR money across national borders?
I don't care.
They have no right to be here in the first place.
And this country is in a crap load of personal and governmental debt; we cannot afford to have U.S. capital slipping southward to a country we ALREADY have a trade deficit with. Moreover, with Mexico as big of a mess as it is, it is a HUGE mistake to have our economies linked (as NAFTA has done). Finally, I would like to point out that Bill Clinton sent a cool 20 billion in lavish subsidies to that mess just south of us.
If we turned off the welfare for illegals, we'd get only those that pill their own weight. I'd happily give them work permits.
There are many more issues at stake than merely economics and crime--like culture, identity, and our long-term survival as a coherent nation.
Would you put up with restrictions on transferring YOUR money across national borders?
Yes. I am in favor of tariffs. Like I said before, it is a HUGE mistake for us to share an economy with another large, sovereign nation--particularly one that is so messy.
Yup.....
Thank you. I work with those undocumenteds. They are not Terrorists. They just want a better life for themselves and their children. If they had a vote, they'd vote for Bush. We're a small County and everyone pretty much knows everyone else, so undocumenteds don't vote here.
One good thing about small Counties, I guess.
As stated, if you can come up with a humane way to deal with the open border, please email it to the President.
