Johnson is a solid conservative and always has been.

Not always. In the late fifties and early sixties he was a socialist and edited the New Statesman, a left wing weekly magazine in England. Like David Horowitz he saw the light and has been a cultural conservative since the mid seventies. His books are all very well written including a condensed biography of Napoleon to whom he attributes the template for the modern dictatorial state. Its brief but well argued. Johnson lived in France in the fifties and now has no love of the French version of democracy.

I cannot recall any election when the enemies of America all over the world have been so unanimous in hoping for the victory of one candidate. That is the overwhelming reason that John Kerry must be defeated, heavily and comprehensively.

Mega-bump!

I must admit... his backing of Bush is surprising to me.

Try "Modern Times," a great book. You won't be surprised. He's been a staunch defender of Thatcher and Reagan.

Thomas Paine actually wrote "these are the times that try men's souls" in the winter of 1776/77, not 1777/78, as Johnson seems to imply. That doesn't detract from an excellent article.

Too bad the US intellectuals don't understand it as well as the British intellectuals.
