Rathergate delay
Washington Times ^ | 10/16/04 | Brent Bozell III

Speaking to a media conference thrown by the financial giant Goldman Sachs last week, CBS boss Les Moonves gave his view from the mountaintop about the Dan Rather forgery scandal and how the network's independent investigation would proceed:
"Obviously, it should be done probably after the election is over, so that it doesn't affect what is going on."
What? Dan Rather and CBS try to destroy the Bush campaign with a file of phony military documents, and now they think it would be politically sensitive to release an independent critique of their bias before the election. Obviously, CBS and Mr. Moonves think what Dan Rather tried to do with the forgeries wasn't intended to influence the election.

[snip]

When they do conclude, Mr. Thornburgh and Mr. Boccardi should demonstrate how Dan Rather violated his own precious journalistic principles. In his 1994 book, "The Camera Never Blinks Twice," Mr. Rather lectured: "A serious journalist can't run with a story without confirmation. Two sources at the absolute minimum. ... This is how your narrator made it through Watergate. If I'd gone off half-cocked, if I'd gotten my facts scrambled, if I'd run with unconfirmed leads, I'd be selling insurance right now."
Mr. Rather, a failed salesman for a fly-by-night scam with the address of a Texas branch office of Kinko's, would not qualify to sell insurance today.
Even sadder has been Peter Jennings and Tom Brokaw circling the wagons around Mr. Rather's flagrant violation of journalistic ethics, responding in extremely political tones.
Mr. Jennings said you can't judge Mr. Rather by this one little mistake. It's sort of like saying you can't judge Richard Nixon by one minor burglary at the Watergate.
For his part, Tom Brokaw was back to blaming the real villains, including this narrator:

The longer the "investigation" goes on the less likely that any of the villians at CBS will be fired, even Mapes.

Fired? Their GOAL is manipulate the election for their bosses at CBS (and ABC, NPR, NBC, etc).

At the very least this took CBS out of the 'game' by pre-empting anymore Bush hit pieces.

when I started subscribing to satellite, i started out be getting the "networks" ooption. It cost me an extra $8/mo for the five majors...

After three months, I realized that I had watched them exactly ONE time: for some sports broadcast or other.

That was the end of my spending that extra 8/mo... and the end of my direct experiences with the FRAUDcasters.

Who needs 'em? Not me!

"......Dan Rather and CBS try to destroy the Bush campaign with a file of phony military documents, and now they think it would be politically sensitive to release an independent critique of their bias before the election........"

This would be amusing if it wasn't so transparently pathetic.

Thornburgh is an honest upright person and will set things right, uh huh, yep, ok. Long after the election.

Who needs 'em?

Received loud and clear, sir!

The lake and surrounding hills are just not friendly to receiving signals from the three majors ...er..mediums...er...minor party line repeaters.

Besides, the wife watches those camera-up-the-corpse shows (CSI, CSI-Miami, NY, Bubbaville...blah, blah, blah...) and anything that keeps her from screaming at the really sKerry stuff is good for me in the long run.

Also, the local weather gal is stiff competition for Janice Dean, the weather machine!

I've said from the very beginning of this that it would just fall by the wayside. All the excitment it generated here on FR, about people getting fired seemed funny to me. With the things that they have gotten by with in the past, why did anyone think this would be it....

I couldn't agree more. it is up to us to held them accountable by:

1) Not watching CBS
2) Not supporting CBS sponsors
3) Writing to advertisers, VIACOM, etc.
4) Selling/shorting any VIACOM holdings

We can't rely on the MSM to police themselves and change their ways. It is up to us to impose "economic sanctions"
